Heated syringe and burnt mycelium or contamination?

Hello, new here and to growing mushrooms. I was wondering if this could be burnt mycelium from heating my syringe or contamination? I noticed the spot 1 day after injecting liquid cultures in 4 BRF cakes. It is the only jar with a discoloration (picture is day 5) the area in question has not grown in size or changed in color since noticed. Thanks

Most likely bacterial contamination. If the jar continues to colonize completely without that getting worse then you can probably still fruit it as normal.

Thank you, I'll keep a eye on it to see if the area increases in size and hope for the best. My understanding is when I open the jar it should smell earthy and musty.

Honestly smell doesn't mean much. It only smells bad when it's bad and can still smell good even if it is bad. 100% colonization is a good starting point to look for. Everything under your dry verm layer should become uniformly colonized if it's healthy enough. Then you just birth, dunk, roll, and fruit and see what happens. Don't get attached to them, feel free to start more. More dice rolls more chances of learning, practice, and results. Become good friends with your SAB.

Thanks for the information, didn't know it could smell good and be bad, seems to be growing mycelium good and the area still doesn't look like it's grown any I can update with a new picture in a few more days after giving the jar a little more time to grow. I really appreciate the insight.

The fact that it was so pronounced a day after inoculating and hasn't moved since then is a bit weird. As long as the jar finishes colonizing I'd treat it like normal personally. I just wouldn't use it as brf to bulk for sure.

the spot is coved by white mycelium and is my best looking jar so far. I inoculating some Penis Envy 3 days ago and noticed the same type of spot on one of the jars as well, its the only jar of PE showing mycelium growth so far. I'm starting to think I may have burnt the mycelium by inoculating to fast after heat sterilization of the syringe. thank you all for the info so far, I'll continue to update for reference.

Looks good enough and might work out. I dunno about the heating syringe burning stuff but in the future, if you're working in an SAB, just wait a few seconds before inserting the needle and injecting. Or you can insert the needle red hot, but then wait a little bit before pushing the plunger.

birthed and they had contamination, dry vermiculite layer had green under it in the very center of the cake where I could not see it till removal. I need to do better at sterilization/sanitation practices. birthing PE7 soon hopefully better luck there
