I briefly looked into getting one and AmScope is often recommended here, they have a range of budget scopes. I guess you will find some info on what model is the right one if you punch AmScope into the search engine.

Yeah I feel you, I would have probably gotten one already if I wouldn't feel so uninformed.

Random and maybe slightly unethical;
If you are in America you can always purchase one that you've researched via Amazon, open it up carefully and try it out, then send it back to Amazon. Reason; defective
Err...then on your mates account you can keep checking amazon warehouse to see if it gets listed there cuz open box...
(But I wouldnt try this multiple times)
-------------------- Don't listen to any of my advice cuz I ended up with extreme HBP and nearly died. So I'm a literally an idiot. Don't let me guide u lol. I'm just trying to heal myself.. then I can be better for my family

eBay. Search used. Good light microscopes are crazy expensive new (>$1k) and the "cheap" new scopes from AmScope/OMAX aren't really worth $300 when a used research microscope with vastly better construction and optics will cost around the same.
Use it, modify it, outgrow it, upgrade when you need to. Chances are you won't upgrade to a new scope until you decide to buy an inverted microscope like the cool kids who do animal cell culture.
