Time to first notice bulk substrate becoming colonized

Sorry for the newbie question but I'm concerned my substrate of 50:50 coir and vermiculite may be too dry. I used 600 grams for each and 4 liters water but it seemed dry. Once you place the spawn and bulk substrate in a monotub, how long should it typically take for the substrate start to show some colonization?

Depends how big the top layer is or if there is one.
I usually see growth in a few days with a top layer big enough to just cover the grains.

With a liner and (pseudo)casing layer, you can't see the grains (unless it's clear liner I guess), but if you can, the same recovery time as you see in jars after a shake. It usually won't poke through a top layer until a bit later, within a week is good but some varieties/phenos are going to be slower.

Wouldn't you want the sub at field capacity as opposed to just going with a specific amount?

Always good to underhydrate initially and slowly add water and mix well until you hit capacity, IMO. I've followed recipes (Bod's lol) and ended up with soupy coir, that's much harder to recover from if you don't have more dry coir or verm on hand.

Thanks for the responses. The top layer is fairly thin so I'm guessing if I don't see growth after 1 week I will spray a good deal of sterile water on top.

1. If it truly is under field capacity, pay attention to the color of the coir. If it goes very very light brown, it might need a mist. It's easier to grow with drier substrate than too wet.
2. Normal tap water is fine if you need to most.
