Using a thick beer with agar......

Has anyone ever used beer, like a stout beer, with agar instead of dry yeast and malt extract to grow mycelium? Is it possible? I was thinking about trying it, but I don't know if I want to waste the agar if it won't work....

Mycelia doesn't appreciate alcohol. If you use a beer, be sure to boil it first, then add to the agar. I don't use it in agar, but I have soaked/boiled rye grain in beer.

Well, if he PCs the agar, that should be enough to drive off the alcohol, no?

No. Boil the beer for half an hour or more before adding to the agar. It takes time for the alcohol to boil off.

I went ahead and prepared my dish. I boiled beer for 15 minutes, alcohol evaporates fairly quickly, then I added the agar and boiled for an additional 10 minutes. I used a light beer instead because I thought that the stout would make the agar too dark. I came out relatively clear. If it works, it might be something to pass around. Thanks!

I also wanted to know if you had ever used any mail-order spawn bags? If so, I ordered a Psilocybe Azurscens spawn bag and it says that it is for outdoor cultivation and just to dump it in a shady spot, cover it with hardwood chips (maple, birch, or alder) and keep it moist. What would I want to do to move it indoors?
