First time oat jars; inoculation questions.

First time doing oat jars theyre in the pc now. this thing gets loud, coin trick from bod and its getting up there, but its worth the process, hopefully. My pc doesnt have a pressure gate but if its loud with the coins im assuming im in safe territory(15 weight plus 2 quarters). Im curious what the minimum time is. Its been vented. Also of course agar would be the best method but what would be the best for a spore syringe? Just open the lid carefully and shoot it in and lock it back up? Or inject it into it with the lid off. If i were to put a hole in the lid i would need something very sterile which at that point i feel i should use the syringe and forget a hole, opinions?

Hour n a half later its off the stove maybe an hour 40, also 10 minutes of venting. Im just gonna let the pressure slowly release and take them out tomorrow, let it get all the time it can in lol

Are you doing oat jars with unmodded lids? Are you keeping them loose or tightening them?

The real question is why are you shooting spores into grains? That's just really bad practice. Not having modded lids for that already bad practice only adds to it.
You should be using PF Tek if you want to inoculate using a spore syringe. You need to be using agar if you want to use any grain tek.

Im well aware i already said in my post that this is my available options at the moment, i know it isnt ideal but its what we got and will change asap. So anyways mind answering which way would be best? since i have to remove a lid regardless i can add the hole now and sanitize as i have the special tape it is possible for me to cover it up after. Or i can just shoot it on top, inject it, and/or leave the lid loose or of course add holes and inject through that ext.

Sorry, it's too late to add a hole to the lid. I'd give it a 99.9% chance it will contaminate. If you're going to shoot spores into grains, the best chance is to barely lift the lid in a SAB, and inject some drops of solution into it. The less solution you use, the better the chances of not getting contaminants.

Now this im sure is more bad practice, however ive already used this syringe and its worked beautifully so unless its go contam from sitting my my drawer i know the syringe is clean so ideally it should still be.
Im going to do two, maybe three just to be sure.
I will inject one using the method we talked about in a sab, im also gonna make a modified lid, sanitize the hell out of it, and swap it with another lid real quick so ideally nothing should have an effect.
Id like a control but i guess that isnt an option. To be honest my first time using a pressure cooker and it has no gauge so im praying the oats are even rightðŸ˜

Are you using the 16 qt. Presto with the adjustable jiggle weight? (5/10/15 psi) I don't trust that thing beyond 15 psi. That's what I have, and the bottom is already pushed out to the point it's visibly convex shaped, and rocks on my flat-top range unless I shim it with a few razor blades. I've never added weight to the jiggle weight and it still has pushed out like that.
Keep us updated on how everything works, it could help others in the future.

So the grain looked good, perfect humidity id say as far as i can tell. I went ahead and made 2-3 modified lids and 2-3 regular unmodified style. I have three i ran out of spore solution for so i guess they will sit to the side for now, tape covering the holes and now we sit and wait to see what, if anything, happens. Wish me luck. It was all id say a clean process, my idea should i have issues was that the pressure didnt get quite right more so than i think contam coming from the lid swap. If they all fail it would clearly be because of that, or bad spore syringe but i believe ive taken great care of that as well. Time will tell

The lid swap is definitely contaminated already. If it wasn’t cooked along with the rest, it’s dirty. Sorry. 😢 since you have a pc, why not do agar? It’s super easy and it works wonders.

What makes you so sure that it is contaminated, the lid can be sterilized otherwise the entire point of the pc is sterilize the oats?
The glass and lid can be sterilized with alcohol or a million things. Unless im missing something? Also again im in the process of getting to agar i used what i had as a trial run. I used 2$ worth of oats so if it is contam oh well im just curious how you can be sure its contam from simply changing the lid with another sterile lid. Hell you have to remove the lid to put the agar in, the timeframe its exposed is almost identical.

Alcohol is a sanitizer, not a sterilant. Very different.

Noob, did you wrap the lids in foil, PC them, and then swap them in the SAB? Also, did you grab the lids using the lid bands in place, or only the lids with your fingers on the edge of them, then installed the lid bands?
If you only doused them in ISO and assumed they were sterile, then they weren't.
The one-piece plastic lids are easier to work with in terms of keeping fingers away from the rim of the jars and the edges of the lids.

Gloves, iso, sab, rim only. Now maybe it didnt 100% sterilize but the iso had to do a decent amount i feel like its got a fighting chance unless yall are 1000% confident its fucked. theres always at least one saying somethings contam on a perfect setup you know, im not saying yall are wrong but ive seen people say contam and bad methods ext that still work fine, what are my chances i guess is the best question. Its a pretty aggressive strain. The lid was inside of the band and i flipped it on top to minimize contact.
Maybe not sterile but the grain is whats going to be inoculated and its sterile along with the glass, the only exception is the lid it isnt touching aaaand its maybe not sterile but super clean. I feel as if thats got to mean something or some sort of fighting chance.

As long as you don't shake the jar, there's a chance. It might be a slim chance, but nothing is impossible.
I had assumed you PCed the lids when you meant said you were going to sterilize them.
ISO only sanitizes, so just remember that in the future.
