Some questions about getting ready for my 2nd flush

Hey Y’all! Currently riding out the end of my first flush in my shoe boxes. I used scissors to cultivate so far, as my mushrooms grew in some pretty dense clusters and the twist and pull method was really disturbing the substrate and mycelium. My question is should I try to remove as much of that base stem material as possible before dunking and casing? I’m worried this old material may rot or cause contam. Thanks for the input!! Any is much appreciated.

Cut as close to the sub as you can. I like to use a big kitchen knife and just mow it all down. The stumps usually won't rot, they'll just fuzz up with mycelium growth and new fruits will grow around them.

Cool, thank you. Is it worth cutting the base and drying for consumption? They are pretty hefty.

If its mushroom its worth cutting , for maximum yield pull twist out, than just brush of the coir.. Or as above said, cut as close as possible without making it too hard for yourself

Would you mow these down and start the second flush or let these pins ride?

cut closer to the sub next time if you can. i would personally clear all the pins out & wait for the second flush. the little ones hardly grow when i leave them

Yeah I cut as close as physically possible to the sub right at the base of the stem. The perfect cut looks like a mushroom was barely there at all. Just a little blue dot for me. Props to OP for providing good high quality pictures for clarification.

I went through and cleared most of that out. It was a pain in the ass and I’ll get closer next time. I was just nervous about disturbing the mycelium. Gonna dunk and roll tomorrow

i get you, but don’t worry if you tear up the substrate a little. you just don’t want to completely rip up all the top layer. usually it’s easier to get close to the sub if you can pull the sub block out & use some scissors to really get close to the base. i use pruning scissors like the ones they use to trim up cannabis nugs, nice & sharp & the spring loading feature is really nice

These are exactly what I used! Just didn’t pull the cake out. That’s a great tip cause it was a PITA tryin to cut them in the box. I don’t think I’m gonna dunk it. Just gonna mist it heavily. Seems like dunking is a bit out dated from what I’ve read today and not really needed for shoe boxes. I have a couple bigger ones I’m gonna give one more day then pull that cake out so I can get close to the base.

i don’t dunk & get pretty solid second flushes. a lot of other people stopped dunking too. just heavy mist & make sure water doesn’t pool on the surface after a few hours. i’ll usually mist heavily for the next 2-4 days following the second flush & then just make sure it’s staying nice & moist
