Wash off salt after treatment?
    #27946149 - 09/11/22 11:33 PM (1 year, 4 months ago)

Hello,

Newbie here, I thought I had some blue-green mold on the top of my mushroom cake so I sprinkled a small amount of table salt on top, but I think this might be killing the mycelium on the side of the cake now. My question is, after treating with salt, should I now rinse the cake to remove the remaining salt?

Just wanted to say, I have some 1 inch mushrooms already so probably not long until ready to harvest, this is why I'm not throwing out the cake just yet. I don't want the salt to destroy the mushrooms I have, but also I'm not sure how much salt actually spreads on the cake after misting. I wondered if a quick rinse would be the best policy to get rid of remaining salt.

Thanks for the advice!

You shouldn't treat with salt to start with.
Contamination doesn't magically go away because you salted it.

Yeah, I figured as much, I've read through the forums on here and I realise there's a lot of different opinions on the salt. In honesty, I think it might not actually be trich, I might have just been panicking (I'm new to this).

Some posts said salt might help, but now I have it so, not sure how best to remove it without disturbing the production?

Scrape the salt off, not much more you can do.

I was wondering, won't the salt water basically run down the whole cake eventually and destroy it? This is why I thought maybe I should rinse it clean, or would that harm the mushrooms more?

Sorry for the basic questions, I feel like I've learnt so much from just my first attempt at growing but there are a few details about mycelium tolerances I just haven't got my head round yet.

Thanks for your time

The blue was probably just bruising it happens. Without pics we can't tell ya for sure. But salt doesn't help stop contamination. Scrap it off rinse it off and wait for your fruits to mature it should be ok.
