Chunky Monkeys - Cracked Caps
    #27658234 - 02/14/22 03:50 AM (1 year, 11 months ago)

Hi everyone, first post here.

I've been successfully growing PF Teks in the past and decided to move on to monotub and give that a try. So far my results have been a bit spotty and would like to hear some feedback and get some advice from the community.

Grain Spawn -
Popcorn Tek (10/10 contamination-free quart jars)

Spores -
B+ from a Multi-Spore syringe

Sub to Spawn Ratio (3:1)
Coir/Verm/gypsum - https://oneearthmushrooms.com/pages/cvg-calculator
8cm deep

Tub Colonization Time
14 days - heat mat at ~25°C

Days Fruiting soo far
14 days

Tub Setup
- 4 Holes with polyfill (2 lower for CO2 / 2 upper)
- 6000-6500k Lights 12/12 hr shifts
- Manual Mist and airing a few times a day

Results 14 days into fruiting

QUESTIONS TO YOU GUYS
1. Looks like I'm getting quite spotty growths in the tubs and the orientation of the fruits are all over the place. Is there something specific I can do to get them to face upwards? (i thought the light was a trigger for this). Also, from what I read, the spotty growth can be due to using a multispore syringe. I will isolate strain on next round and try again.

2. Looks like the caps of some of the fruits are cracking, especially that big chodey fellah in the photo. Is that due to rapid growth or something in my setup/environment that could be causing this? Some of the smaller guys are also cracking.

3. Any general comments are welcome!

MY NEXT STEPS
I have some agar plates now and will be trying to clone/isolate strain for the next round. Looking forward to any advice/tips!

Thank you!

Lose the heat mat and any other 'gadgets' you're running they're really just counter-productive. If you're comfortable the mushrooms are comfortable. The caps are cracking because they're drying out.

Fruits are probably small because you used MS. You can either make new jars with the same spores and hope for a set better set of genetics or try to isolate or clone on agar for more desirable fruits.

Thanks for the feedback. The heat mat was for the colonization stage only as the room was quite cold, and it definitely helped speed up that stage.

No heat mat was used for the fruiting stage. Will be isolating for the next grow session.

They will colonize and fruit in colder temps, just much slower. Inside jars or a mono the mycelium produces its own heat and will be a few degrees warmer.

What is that in the pictures plugged in? Just wondering.

Have you looked into how to properly make and dial your mono tubs in? The reason I mention that is because the holes on yours look different than what I'm accustomed to over the years. In my experience caps crack from being to dry. A mono not built correctly is much harder to dial in.

I go with 1.5 - 2" holes on both sides of the mono stuffed really tight with poly fill, or covered with a few layers of micropore just barely right above the substrate surface level.

Also will use 1 - 1.5" holes on the opposite small sides at the top under the lid. They're barely stuffed with a thin thin layer of poly or halfway covered with micropore. My conditions are always perfect for the first flush.

Its just set and forget basically.

A good starting place i.m.o is to grow from ms and take a tissue clone sample from a nice cluster during the first flush.

If you're going to isolate make sure you label everything as it's very easy to lose track if you're running alot of plates or multiple strains finding genetics worth keeping.

Good luck 🤟

Nice one, thanks for the reply.

RE This: What is that in the pictures plugged in? Just wondering.

  • 4x 2" holes plugged with polyfill - 2 on each side. One higher up / One lower down closer to sub
  • LED strips 6000-6500k lights (12hr cycles) - i moved them out of the tub itself in case it was generating unnecessary heat, so now they sit in the cabinet structure above the boxes.
  • A dehydrator (bottom right)

Waiting for a good cluster to grow and then will isolate/clone.

Do you have any idea why the fruit are growing in all kinds of directions? when you mix sub and grain, do you flatten down the surface (hard)? I made sure to not have exposed grains and lightly flattened with my hands.

I dont think its a good idea to run that dehydrator under the monotub. Or does the heat fade away good enough?

Yes, heat dissipates outwards, it has vents on the side and the cabinet itself is quite a big wooden structure, it doesn't get hot enough to warm up the tubs above.

When you make tubs you want to flatten it down by pushing gently but firm. A spatula works great for this. I also like to push the sides down all around before I even out the surface.

An even surface makes for a better pinset.

Exposed grains doesn't matter, if your spawn is clean. In fact I prefer to have exposed grains in monos. The biggest thing is making sure your spawn is clean and you use enough jars.
