Where do you want to live and why? 2

Hi all, I'm entertaining a move for when I want to settle down and start building a life within a community. Right now I have to move around a bit-- I'm curious of places you all have found that have great culture. I'm not a fan of cities for the most part, though I do love DC. So far my list for settling is:
Taos, New Mexico (outdoors, good gun laws, mountains, artistic scene, holistic medicine, desert scenery) Telluride, Colorado (community of mountain mushroom people) Hanover, New Hampshire (excellent healthcare with access to outdoors, sensible community, small town with big amenities, weekly farmers markets, Dartmouth) Banff, Alberta (access to rocky mountains + 5 dispensaries and international culture) Ashville, North Carolina (breweries and mountains) Langebaan, South Africa (international expats in a small beach town, no industry allowed, multiple festivals, sailing community) Washington, DC (free museums, excellent architecture, great public transit, booming culture) San Diego, California (beach city, best weather)
I'm curious of any places you all have lived which stand out for you, or places you've traveled which you wish to return and live at, or wherever you thought "damn this is the place to live."
For reference, I've lived in the Delaware Valley, Pittsburgh, and New Hampshire
Pittsburgh was as nice as a city can be which doesn't have access to a coast. Small, clean and happening, with a good music and bar scene + plenty of seasonal festivals. Nothing really special about the New Jersey/ East PA area besides access to the eastern seaboard as well as close ties to family. New Hampshire is magnificent, with easy access to nature and good hiking in the Whites (plus we have a bus system up here which allows me to walk to essentially any country in the world via a bus ticket to Boston Logan or JFK international).
Share you!

ive been entertaining the idea of moving to Buffalo NY in a few years. i grew up in Pittsburgh PA, moved to Sacramento CA back in 2015 and have been living in Nevada for the last 3 years. i wont move anywhere that doesn't have legal cannabis. New York just passed law for legal recreational so its now on my radar. plus i want to move back to the east coast where its greener and rains more. its dead and dry in Nevada and has been covered in smoke for the last month or two because of the nearby wildfires.
Buffalo seems decent. right next to Canadian border, two Great Lakes, short distance driving to major nearby cities. decent price for homes.
last night i was checking out Michigan home prices and they are even cheaper. plus, weed is legal there

You can't move to Banff AB. You can buy a secondary vacation home there but in order for it to be your primary residence you have meet a bunch of requirements set by Parks Canada since the town is in the park. If you are doctor setting up a new practice they would probably let you, because your services are in demand. But you can't move there just because you want to. Everybody wants to move to Banff and they are controlling population and new construction/sprawl.

NO, it looks cold as hell.
OP: get in where you fit in. You mentioned relatives, so I'd go near there because that seems important to you. Settle somewhere solid and travel to the other places for vacations.

That makes sense about Banff. It's too beautiful-- I went there originally because it was the closest dispensary to Jasper national park, not expecting anything but a small town. Pleasantly surprised there... that being said I'm a US medical student so its possible, and they lack my specialty at their local hospital.
What I can't get past is these wildfires... in a past career I worked in earth sciences as a trained geologist and I know the future is not conducive of future settlements in... northern California for example. These wildfires... one side of me says to put up with them and live life, the other side of me says to move to a location that will be desirable in 40 years so my kids have a crazy spot to call home
Those northern lights too... I didn't get to see them but

I been thinking about building an off-grid cabin in Indiana on maybe like 10 acres.
The building codes there are apparently lax AF, and teh computerzz say it'll be a good place to be when the climate shits.

Idaho is filled with insane rednecks and WY likely the same... they have like 1 sane city each, same as Utah - insane religious regressives.
But beautiful nature!
Oregon and Washington have beautiful nature without the psychotic regressives in some places...

Hell yeah. ME too. I might be looking more mountainous areas of like TN or NC though.
BUt the land in Indiana is super cheap I hear. Could probably get 10 acres for like $2500 an acre.

Idaho may be full of religious people but they're super nice and the hunting up there is 👌 I was sleeping in my car and woke up to two eagles perched on top of a church watching me. Sadly the wildfire smoke was obscuring them at about 50 yards but that made for a beautiful red morning sun
I like Idaho. Washington and Oregon dissuade me because of the eternal rain showers and tax rates

Taos, New Mexico
I just got back from my 2nd visit to Ruidoso, NM. Got back yesterday. I think it was even more beautiful this time than my first time. Ruidoso is a criminally underrated gem.
Haven't made it to Taos yet, but I will. I will be making repeat trips to NM. I already have a vacation home outside of Santa Fe booked for November.

Yeah bud you know how highly I think of Wyoming. Particularly the Yellowstone/Grand Tetons/Jackson region. If I had to pick a favorite place that I've ever been to, that would probably be it. I used to work in WY and a lot of the people I ended up meeting out there were among the most genuinely nice folks I've still ever met to this day. But yes parts of WY are as good as it gets as far as scenery/nature/wildlife goes.
And Utah is also a great pick. Utah has what, FIVE national parks?!? That is insane.

It would be epic living up in the upper peninsula of Michigan near (or even better yet on) one of the great lakes.

Yeah that was largely my same experience with the people of Wyoming. In fact it was almost how absurd how nice a lot of them were. Like these were the type of people who would pull over to help you change a flat -- but not only would they help you, they'd change it for you and then offer you to come back to their place for a beer and a bison steak.

Dude I love Colorado. It's got so much going on and has an awesome out doors community. If you love to play outside, it's the place to be in the US.
But next time I head out I'm thinking Oregon again. Last time I went through, I was traveling the 101 down the coast. Met a really cool dude, who had this awesome little dog with him, at a state park and we ened up chillin and smoking there for few days. Really chill good times. But I would like to back and check out the rest of the state and see what's up.
After that who knows. I don't really make plans, I just go with the wind.

Not that you’re considering moving internationally anyways, but don’t pick Sydney. Or all of NSW at this point. We are supposed to be a really progressive nation with lots of amazing places to live and good all round standards of living. But right now it seems like some weird police state from the Cold War era.
Not sure if you get Aussie news where you live but it’s almost embarrassing how we have been dealing with it all.
I’ve never been to America but what’s Alaska like to live. I’ve always wanted to visit it and a friend went there a few years ago. Said it was amazing.
