Schizophyllum and bruising or not? First time grow
    #26818279 - 07/11/20 08:58 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hi everyone! Sorry for the dump question, but wanna know profi opinion. Searched all threads, just want to be sure.

This is BRF cakes, full colonization, one week in SGFC. I'm concerned white mold on cake, searched this is schizophyllum. Also I found some dark blue area. bruising, contamination? Btw, pins look healthy, smell is ok.

Is it ok and safe to eat?

Thanks for response.

1. can you post more pics?

2. dark blue area/ dark blue bruising not a contam. some mushrooms bruise blue while growing also must be very dry in fruiting chamber for cake to bruise blue area.

3. how many times you mist? how many hours you dunk the cakes?

1. Fresh shots:

Tall cake from glass jar

Big flat cake from plastic container

3. Misting 3-4 times, fanning 5-8 times, misting is depending on dry or wet cake's verm on me eyecheck. 24 hours to dunk. Last couple days, as bruised areas being discovered, I fan n mist more frequently. Think it doesnt spread anymore.

To prevent other simple questions, describe full process:
Used to take 1 pint jars / plastic containers, cause hard to find 1/2 pint in my region (I know it raises a chances of bad pausterization, BTW I've already found correct jars for the next try). 3 weeks till full colonization (without any signs of contaminations) plus 1 week after, then 24 hours dunking, rolling, and get to the chamber.

The big one is plastic container pinned 4 days after being placed. The tall one is glass jar pinned 6 days after. The glass jar has some shoulder, sooo I decide to cut the cake to the size of the cap for birthing.

So, my thoughts:
1. Tall cake was cutted while birthing and myc start to grow fuzzy overlay - so its just an aerial mycelium (and its safe)? And this is the cause of slow pinning compared to the big flat cake
2. Big flat cake has less fuzzy myc and all fruits look healthy, it was pinning faster. BUT I worry about some discolored dots on caps (not white, its little lighter than the cap), dont know is it normal?
3. OR its Schizophyllum or some bacterial infection and myc in a tall cake get lack of water with slow grow, because of contaminated neighbour and I should throw it out?

Trying to comprehense my mistake to prevent it in future. Hope for your replies

S commune is a species of mushroom not a mold or bacteria. I don’t see anything close to resembling it in those pics. Some bacteria yes, but no fungi other than cubes is visible yet.

If bacterial is it safe to eat? Fruits look good
RRs topic says:

"Dried mushrooms can't possibly have live bacteria, so they're safe to eat. Whenever you're in doubt, simply boiling will kill any live bacteria, but it's totally unnecessary with dried fruits."
RR

Meanwhile keep an eye on

1. lower down on fanning. mist and fan afterwards very gently 3 to 4 times.

2.plastic containers are fine, i am in tropical country glass does not do well here temperature changes in couple of hours and reading a lot of threads RR notes and moderators. i came to conclusion you can grow brf cakes in any container as long as it have good air exchange, wide mouth and good seal.i grow in plastic only now.

3.never cut a cake. if it breaks go with coir and small shoe box depending on size of cake and coir you can fit in. in my experience when i didnt knew shroomery exist i use to birth cake soon as the jar went full white never let them consolidate got bacterial infection till i found out how important is to let the cake sit and if it breaks go to coir. otherwise its always slow grow or no grow.

4. Schizophyllum is a species of mushrooms like pastywhyte said. it does not grow on other mushroom fruit. i think what you are trying to say is that white stuff takes over mushroom and the cake fruits too but is all cover with thick white thing thats cob web and your cakes look fine and fruiting fine.

5. job well done

6. slow grow thats normal some cakes fruit slow than others. they give good second flush. but once you cut the cake mycelium will spend more time on recovery and healing and not fruiting. there is always some bacteria either coexisting with mycelium or trying to eat it.

7.i have eaten black mushrooms that didnt dry well and to touch and break they break like cracker but later found out the cap was not dry enough. trip was not strong and was a very good muscle relaxant.
if you dry them well and making sure there is no moisture left they are good to eat.
