anyone know anything about cameras?

Would you prefer a 20megapixel with 4k or is a 48megapixel with 2.7 k just as good? I'm looking for something small I can take night shots with and travel with easy. Nothing too expensive.

Mostly for taking photos or videos? Either way, DSLR or mirrorless, compact cameras with their tiny sensors are not worth it. It can say it has 24 megapixels, but still makes worse photos then a 10 mpx DSLR. Nikon D3500 is a good, cheap option.

For taking photos. Specifically, I wanted to take shots of the aroura. I have a redmi note 7 that has a 48 megapixel. It's pretty decent, but I wanted something compact as a backup that I could travel with. I was looking at Nikon. Does look pretty nice. I was mainly focused on the 4k stuff. You think maybe i got the wrong impression?
I was considering buying this https://www.amazon.com/Underwater-Waterproof-Full-Color-Displays-Snorkeling/dp/B07TVMQ2FX/ref=aw_rtpb_1_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07TVMQ2FX&pd_rd_r=EH4NGQY12MJRTPA2CKMM&pd_rd_w=xXldR&pd_rd_wg=n5dia&pf_rd_p=58a042f1-0e85-4095-bb1a-147e952aefd7&pf_rd_r=EH4NGQY12MJRTPA2CKMM&psc=1&refRID=EH4NGQY12MJRTPA2CKMM

4k with 20 fps is terrible video quality, 4k is just hype. It's much better to have 1080p with 60 fps on an APS-C sensor. Don't look at the numbers, megapixels and video resolution, they mean very little in the end. What's important is the sensor size, especially for night shots. I have Redmi note 7 as well! And Sony hx350 camera and now just got the Nikon D3500. The first two both have small sensors, and I'm very dissapointed with their picture quality. But Nikon is amazing, very happy about it. I think it's worth paying $500 for that camera, it will keep you happy for a long time. It takes just a bit more space than a compact camera, you get used to it.. And the battery can last up to 1500 shots!

Great choice! You will love this camera! When you see the pictures, and when you learn a bit about manual control, photos from the Redmi and most compact cameras will look like doodles of a trained chimp in comparison! Did you buy the kit with 18-55 lens?

You should be looking at size of sensor instead of mp count.
Night photography where you see those beautiful milky way shots requires a camera with a sensor that can capture 15-20 seconds exposures without a ton of noise.
Sounds like you are on the right path with the Nikon, although I would have recommended going mirrorless as the future is mirrorless.

P.s. now that you have the Nikon you need a good fast wide angle lens. If on a budget I recommend checking out rockinon/samyang, they'll be manual focus but that will be needed anyway for night photography. The 12mm f2.0 is an outstanding little night lens usually available for $200-300. Ebay or marketplace can be great resources too, as photogs tend to buy n sell gear frequently. With manual focus lenses they really last forever. I have a Jupiter 8 50mm f2.0 that is from 1956 and was made in Russia following wwii using glass and schematics from zeiss in Germany, it is a gem and produces sharp photos with dreamy bokeh
Obviously if you can spend more there are plenty of other options.

You can buy a pro-level mirrorless full frame camera for the price of that shiny brick.

Reason I bought the redmi was cause of the camera. It's decent. And sugar bear, I bought the kit. It comes with a couple lenses. What's this mirrorless stuff about? Could you make a recommendation for future reference?

The kit includes the 70-300 telephoto which is for wildlife and sports where you can't be close and the 18-55 which covers normal range to portrait. Both lenses are zooms meaning they have ability to change focal length. Neither are very fast which describes the maximum aperture which directly correlates to how much light it gathers and how long the shutter needs to be open. Fast zooms are by rule heavy and expensive. Sigma has a couple of fast zooms for a ASPC that aren't too expensive (the sensor size you own now) the 18-35mm f1.8 in particular would be ideal for night photography at $629, their 17-50mm f2.8 is about half that and could work if you have dark skies. Prime lenses have only a single focal and usually have faster apertures for your money, manual focus ones like the 12mm f2.0 being highest value because of the lack of focus motors allows the $$ to go tohigher quality optics.
Your Nikon has a mirror that reflects what the lens sees to an optical viewfinder where you put your eye, when you press the shutter the mirror flips up redirecting the image to the sensor. Mirrorless cameras obviously don't have a mirror and the optical viewfinder is replaced by a small high res display or a rear screen, some skip the electronic viewfinder and just have a flip or tilt (maybe touch) screen panel on the back.
Right now sony is killing it in the top of the market (full frame) but both Nikon and canon have now jumped in with full frame mirrorless models. Fuji is very good in ASPC as is Sony but their (sony) focus is on full frame, so their ASPC system isn't as robust. Below that is micro four thirds which is olympus and Panasonic, their sensor is a bit smaller than ASPC but still gets the job done.
The big advantage to mirrorless is smaller size of both lens and camera, as well as allowing the rangefinder style.
End of the day you should look at your interchangeable lens camera as a system, consider lenses first because a good lens can give you great pictures on a newer body 10 years from now when you decide the d3500 has reached end of life or it dies. Good "glass" is king, as I mentioned above I have lenses that are older than I am and have been mounted to dozens of cameras over the years across the world and yet still will produce quality images on today's top cameras.

Its amazing that mirrorless camera are possible now. In the past, all SLRs had mirrors cause that the best way to view an image before taking a picture. Its amazing how far technology has come, even for professional cameras!

I've been running a Sony NEX 5R for the past few years and had the NEX 3N before that, both mirrorless, small for dslr and have managed to find lots of adapters to use a myriad of lenses made for different camera mounts.
Travelled the world with me and took some hard knocks.
Also easy to run remotes and such off of.
I dislike the apps though and normally wouldn't recommend sony anything. Just what I could afford at the time and ended up loving it! Can find nice priced on ebay.
I'll have to dig out some star pics from my old hard drive when I find it, got this one though …
October Moon 10-10-16

also great for macro mycology shots, ya know, if your into that sorta thing..

No need for that, D3500 has bluetooth, so all you need is a smartphone and Nikon's app to remotely take photos! I'll try to take some comparison shots of the moon with Redmi and Nikon, but rain is forecast for the next 10 days here...
