How I Ruined my First Flush of Mushrooms
    #26014050 - 05/26/19 10:07 AM (4 years, 7 months ago)

I was the proudest man on earth when my first flush from my shoe-boxes came in. ~300 wet grams, I was set to trip for months. I took 20 wet grams a month ago, which was a life changing experience. When I was drying out the remaining mushrooms, I stopped drying when I thought they looked good, and bagged them up. I noticed a strong smell of mushrooms when I opened the bags a few days later, but hadn't read anything about that before and assumed it was normal. I attempted yesterday to eat 3 grams of said dried mushrooms, and felt absolutely nothing at all. There's no doubt that the entire flush is ruined, but am I correct in assuming they were improperly dried, leading to their demise?

From what I've read they should break like a cracker if they are properly dried and you also shouldn't get them above 70°C (160°F)

How long was it from harvest until your observation?  Yes getting them dry as soon as possible is important.  Use a dehydrator you can use a lot of heat as In the post above says.  I’m just wondering about how fast potency could be lost.

Definitely need to be dried longer, if they don’t crumble very easily then there not dry enough. Also if not dried properly they weigh different, the 3 grams u ate may only be a g or 2 cracker dry

Even just 2 grams I would have felt it. There's no doubt I dried them wrong, but they didn't rot or mold. Is keeping mushrooms "not quite cracker dry" a surefire way to ruin potency?

A friend of mine has had the same issue... I'm curious to know as well if not-quite-properly-dried mushrooms can lose their potency. His were dried thoroughly but the containers he kept them in leaked humidity in and they were bendy and soft after a while of storage. When he ate an entire ounce bag (!!!) with a buddy he felt basically nothing.

I've always heard that storage is key, but like Prestidigitator, I'm curious to hear more and understand why this happens so that I can better advise my friend.

Yes, moisture degrades them quickly. Store in jars with desicant for best results.

Answer Land Trout's question lol. Your post is kind of confusing. How long after your harvest did you use them? First you say a month then you say 3 days . Doesn't make any sense.

I dried them as soon as I picked them a month ago. I tried to take them yesterday and it failed. I had taken some at harvest to great affect. I’m unsure where you saw 3 days.

How did you dry them? Exact procedure including times elapsed.

How did you dry them? The best way to preserve them is at 160f in a dehydrator at 12-24hrs. They should crush very easily.

I’m surprised they lost activity that quickly, but I believe it.  Drying them with desiccants used to be normal and I’ve had those old mushrooms last six months in a ziplock, who knows how old they were by the time we got them.
There’s a lot of information on here about the action that causes potency loss.
Thanks Shenume

If they were from MS injection there is always the possibility you ate some duds.

I always keep a desiccant packet or a silica gel packet in with my dried mushies! That way if there is any moisture left that u didn't know about it will get it. Also cracker dry mushies can take in moisture from the air so it's always a good idea.

Cracker dry- The best way I found to know if ur mushies are cracker dry or not is to lightly twist the cap. If I moves at all without breaking its not done yet.

I would also have somebody else try them too before u toss them bc it could just be a tolorence thing from u tripping so hard before. Its happened to me. I guess I wouldn't say tolorence but ur body might need more time to re build ur serotonin back up.
