How long is coco coir good for? Me help ASAP have jars ready to spawn
    #25701269 - 12/24/18 10:58 PM (5 years, 1 month ago)

I have 5 kg blocks on coco coir and made to much a few days ago and just left it in the bucket. My question is is it safe to use this for my tubs today? Will it contaminate ? Don’t want to waste these jars. Please help guys.

I would definitely use freshly made coco for your tub. Not the few day old stuff. You are trying to give the mycelium the best chance to out grow contaminates once spawning to bulk. Thats my understanding of how it works.

A Trusted Cultivator will chime in soon I am sure.

Good Luck.

Damn really, no pasteurization? Holy Shite. I'm very very familiar with coco, its been my preferred cannabis medium for 12 or so years. I've used it for cubes too but always Bucket Tek"d it.

Yea, you'll be fine. Coir is contam resistant. Just ensure it is still field capacity.

My love for coco just grew even more. Thanks for the info I'll run some trials myself vs. pasteurizing it as I just got back into the hobby and am afraid not to pasteurize.

If yee got room in your freezer, just bag it up n throw it in there.  But with half brick(bout 1lb dry) being a full grocery bag amount field capacity for me, 5 kgs field capacity i assume? Or was it 5kgs Dry? Would be quite a few bags, n fill your freezer quick.  Merry Christmas BTW, n good luck:)

PS. In the past  a few times I had extra coir I just used it in my garden for plants, or inside for plants and seed starter, the stuff is relatively cheap for how many uses it has so I'm sure it won't go in vain if your creative enough

Yes it'll be fine. Coir is one of the few substrate materials where people consistently store it hydrated for months with no contams.

Wow I honestly never knew that about coir being able to be left out n retain its use so contam free, just never really had to keep it very long hydrated, just always used it for other stuff, n someone told me to freeze extras but never second guessed it.  I'm sorry about the stress that caused you(licky711) to post this, but it taught me something new so thank you

You can use cold tap water if you like, just watch if you're using coir for plants as it sometimes has trich added and does need pasteurized. It's better to use reptile bedding.
