Slow growth/Aborts?
    #25381833 - 08/11/18 02:58 PM (5 years, 5 months ago)

I am a first time grower and just had a couple questions.

I am growing cubensis in a bulk straw substrate. I have 3 or 4 mushrooms that are growing quite well.  There are lots of knots and really small pins (do these pins look like aborts to anyone?). Is it normal to have a few fast growers while the rest seem to be slow or not growing at all? Can someone have a look at my pic and tell me if anything seems out of the ordinary?

There is no contaminants that I can see. Temp is around 80F. I am exchanging air 3 to 4 times a day and misting once and day. Casing is moist with no puddling. 12 hour light cycle. Any help would be appreciated  thank you. I cased the myc roughly 3 weeks ago and seen pins right away. I know it takes awhile and if I am just being impatient please let me know. Thank you.

Welcome to the shroomery.  Work out how to post your photos and everyone will take a look and hopefully help you out.

What did you case them with?  Hpoo coir or just straw?

Did you ho pf cakes or wbs or grain?
Give us photos and details for us other newbie growers using the site for infinite information...

Sounds pretty normal.  Not sure the severity of what you are describing but a certain amount of that is just how they grow, as far as I can tell.

A pic would help.

To get a pic into your post you have to choose "Click here to upload a picture, then 'choose files' (the pic must be downloaded into your computer first), then you have to cut and paste the URL code into your post.

Increase FAE, they're suffocating...just flip the lid,or sit it slightly ajar ... never mist on a schedule, only when it needs it

I was referring more to the mycelial growth up the stipes and on the caps (a small amount is normal)

Also I have a second tub of exactly the same setup that has been colonizing for the past 19 days. Should I wait to see knots before casing? Or in your experience would it be better to not case it at all?

I was thinking of casing today and then let it set for 5 or so days before fruiting.

I spawn to fruiting conditions  (no colonization period with limited FAE) in an unmodified tub with the lid flipped, with faster and better results than with colonization periods and monotub configuration... restricted gas exchange for colonization is outdated misinformation; mushrooms (and mycelium) are aerobic organisms, and require oxygen for healthy growth... and 12/12 lighting has been shown beneficial to mycelium through all stages of growth from spore to spent... many of the steps in many of the teks are unnecessary, and in many cases, not optimal, or even detrimental... casing is unnecessary unless you're growing PE or APE, and even then, it's controversial with good surface condition maintenance... I don't case, but would probably do it between spawn and full colonization, but before knots, though if you're easy, may not harm potential pins

Do you not get contamination with the lid flipped? I've spawned in total darness with no air exchange for 2 to 3 weeks, case, and then back in darkness for 5 days  then add light. (although I've heard having light from day 1 works too..so any difference in opinions on what works) I will probably care just for better moisture control. I've spent days reading different threads without a specific particular way so I have tubes, jars and even outdoor on the go.

No contams... we spawn in open air, so it's full of contaminant spores from that day forward... the reason we generate spawn in sterile conditions is so that we have a healthy living culture present that has a chance to colonize the substrate before contamination spores have a chance to germinate, and grow to be an issue... you'd probably see increased colonization speed and less moisture loss with light and air introduced at spawn (my experience anywho, and I've black bagged and all that jazz) the extra time to colonize doesn't offset moisture lost to more efficient FAE: of course there's a balance, hence the need for a tub in the first place

Also have a question unrelated to this topic. I have some dmt I'll be extracting today once my shipment has arrived. Anyone try dmt while peaking on mushrooms? Super pumped as this will be my first visit with aliens:)

Nice job man glad it's pulling back around.  Hit the psychedelic experience forum for your dmt shrooms question.  I'll be over there for the conversation...

All I can say is i'm crazy jealous!
