First Project - BRF / Shoeboxes - B+ / GT (PINS EDITION!)
    #25364262 - 08/03/18 11:52 AM (5 years, 5 months ago)

Hey all houdanny here. This is my first grow - pretty stoked. Thanks to everyone that's been contributing and keeping the lights on. This community is phenomenal...

I have been researching here for a few months and finally reached out to a friend who's been playing around for about ten years. He sponsored me some B+ and GT LC. I figured even though i could probably start with agar and grain, it might be best to go through the process of PFtek just to understand it. Important to know the history / how we've grown from there.

I used the latest PFtek on the site. Steamed 9 8oz jars and one large 16oz jar in an old large dutch oven for two hours - let them sit in there with heat off for another 2. The next day i prepped and sterilized everything for inoculation. I used a MAP gas torch to sterlize the syringes. The first jar i was a bit heavy on injection - it got about 2mL in it total. The rest of the jars got 1mL over 5 holes. This was Tuesday morning (3 days ago). Here are some photos so far...

The first two are the B+ jars, the first jar i inoculated being the first to show signs of life. Is this even related? More LC quicker grow? I'm sure adding much more would've been oversaturation for the cake. Anyway all jars are showing primordia.

The second two are the GT jars, and a closeup of the furthest along with all jars here showing primordia too.

The temp is around 72-76 consistently (central air) and using a temp gun through the inoculation holes - the temps in the jar seem to be around 76-82 depending on time of day. They are on a high shelf in a doorless closet east facing open windows so they get about 8-10 hours of ambient sunlight a day.

Excited to grow with you all - can't wait to enjoy all the knowledge this community has.

Day 13

Getting close. One B+ is almost fully colonized, the other 3 right behind. Once they are all 100%, I'll take them straight to CoCo Coir using Bod's Easy AF Tek and shoebox them, flipped lid keeping temps around 80*F and 12/12 light.

Teachers have a bit more to go. One of them has barely colonized 3cm radius. One of them is almost fully colonized.

Anyway, Is everything looking nominal? The cakes which are nearing completion show no signs of Trich, or Lipstick they just look a bit wet.

I'm very stoked to get my 25 quart PC from craigslist tonight for 30 dollars. I've got a load of rye berries on sale locally from a farm supply store. I've also gotten 50% off a dozen pint masons and quarts as well. Things are really looking up this week.

Another couple questions related to other projects... I've poured my 1st agar and looped some LC in, it has been 3 days with no signs of life yet, is this typical? I'd also forgotten to make an fae hole w/micropore (Pasty Plates). Would this cause any problems?

Anyway, hoping to fruit at least a few B+ for Labor Day - do y'all think that's possible? Let me know and thanks for all your input...

Day 21

The pins have arrived. I am eeeeelated! :dancer:

Just to catch up on the grow last Tuesday (one week ago) the B+ which was ahead of the pack by about a week I decided to fruit it in the jar (because why not, right?) I dunked for about 4 hours (it still felt like it had a good deal of water weight). I then popped it back into it's jar and gave a small layer of verm and a sandwich ziplock bag over the top. Misted in the morning and at night, keeping watch for surface conditions...

Annnnd this morning i saw the pins forming! How is this looking to y'all? I bottom watered just a bit this morning and it sucked up about half of it. Should i dump and rewater in am? Dump and rewater tonight? Not bottom water at all? Anyway I am super excited...

As far as the other 4 B+ they are all ready to go... ive got the coir in my insulated water jug ready to go into a shoebox tomorrow. The golden teachers are still behind by a few days but they are all looking good to go for this weekend if my estimations are right.

Anyway - let me know what you guys think. Ive only got one pin on the top edge that looks to be pointing down, otherwise no side or bottom pins...

You're off to a fine start.

What brand of jars are those?

Vroomer, these are the Ball Regular Mouth 1/2 Pint (8oz) jars. Think they've got some cornucopia design on the back - which might make them look a bit different compared to the plain ones. Guess i got the "mom-tacular edition".

Also - forgot to ask... I have a bunch of random flours hanging around from cooking recipes (amaranth/quinoa/almond/chickpea/sunflowerseed) Is there some sort of chart I've missed that quantifies the success of these other alternative flours/food sources? Thanks!

I've heard rumblings of people testing different grain flours, including Amaranth / quinoa. I'd use that as a search term.

Your conditions seem optimal, and if you were using clean LC, the amounts used are nominal. Keep us posted:thumbup:

Nice Dude! I started my first jars on the 1st with B+ MS inoculation. 4 have just the bottoms left to colonize and the rest are about 80-90%! I also have the tall 1/2 pints, the wide mouth ones however are supposed to colonize significantly faster than these. Next time
