It's normal. The mycelium grows into the air because the conditions are comfortable for it, the high humidity means it can reach into open air without drying up. Introducing fruiting conditions makes it flatten back down.

Cool thanks for the reply
When these shoeboxes are done colonizing I can take a empty one and flip it over it and make it into a dubtub right? I thought I read somewhere that you can do that unmodified

Yep. Make it a dubbie and you'll get some chubbies.

THANK YOU for this!
I'm experiencing the same spikes (although mine are a lot more sparse) in a monotub and was, literally, about to dump everything into the trashcan a couple of hours before this thread cropped up. I figured I'd grown a nice, healthy colony of mold or something equally annoying and thought I'd check the site one final time before scrapping the grow and starting over - glad I checked!
Much love to you guys for your sage advice!

The last time they were properly referred to as Stropharia sp. was around the 1970's. Stropharia, Leratiomyces & Psilocybe are somewhat related, but more recent genetic testing splits them further still.
The name Stropharia cubensis was given to P.cubensis from a collection in Cuba around 1906, in 1907 another collection was named Naematoloma caerulescens, both of these are deprecated synonyms of Psilocybe cubensis.
Edit: who the fuck named a 'strain' Stropharia? Well that clears it up.

Yes, and thats where this variety comes from, the magazine ads in the 70s that sold it as Ps. stropharia. It is indeed a very old lineage, and is probably the most domesticated variety I've ever come across, much more than b+. I don't think I've ever had a MS tub that wasn't a full canopy minimum 6 oz dry. Perhaps you could call it an heirloom variety? but thats kind of what it reminds me of
all pics in my sig are ms stro

Interesting.
I always thought it was a stupid name.
