Search on wikipedia for "areca nut" and you will find a picture which looks almost exactly like the nuts and leaves you have. Used for chewing..
So it's a synonym of betel nut. Together with the leaves and some lime and maybe tobacco it's made into a quid and chewed. You can find some videos about chewing it on youtube. I'm interested in your experience if you're going to try it!

Yes, to prepare Paan you need some lime in additon to the betel leaf & areca nut. A friend who lived in China for a few years showed me.
You mix some edible lime with a bit of water to make a paste, flatten the leaf, dip your finger in the lime paste and spread it on the leaf like a toast.
After that, you dice the nut (use only the brown nut, not the white part) in small pieces and add a few in the middle of the leaf. Finally just close the leaf like an envelope, some close it by pressing a clove through it to prevent it from opening and to add a bit of mouth numbing. Some people add some tobacco too.
In India they add all sorts of stuff for the taste, like honey, anise, cardamom and other spices.
Be warned though it is a nasty habit, it's not healthy for your teeth and has been shown to cause mouth cancers. Worth trying once though, it's pretty subtle but enjoyable.

Yes thats exactly right. I asked my girlfriend about these and she told me exactly the same thing to do with the leaf and nut. She said she had to fix this for her grandmother and she chewed it got all black and nasty in the teeth. I think i shall try it at least once.

A guy I went to high school with was from Pakistan and brought some back from a trip back home. Interesting taste but I did not notice any psychoactive effect from it.

I expressed an interest in collecting these plants, and an online forum told me off.
In my view, you have a cure-all, which has been used since times immemorial.
In their view, you have a vice, which causes mouth and throat cancer.
I don't see any 'slaked lime' (calcium hydroxide), pictured. It is usually taken with this caustic chemical, probably leading to the irritation.
This chew stains people's teeth very red, permanently, but they have originally copied the habit from royalty. It's social. So, it seems to be a status symbol.
And, the sputum is unavoidable, where it is popular eaten.

The dry, finely-chopped ones, from a headshop, are like little, fast food condiment packages. They have the texture of jaw breaker chunks and taste like urinal cakes smell. It was a fun thing to try, but I think your version would be better.

Ahh, i waited too long. Forgot about them. The things have started mold in the package. I wanted to try this, i guess i have to buy another pack. Well it was very cheap so its not the end of the world. Kind of annoying though.
I report back when i have got a new pack.

A couple months ago my mate rocks up out of the blue and offers me betel nut. He handed me a small stick of mustard (which was a green colour), I wet it in my mouth and dunked it in the lime powder, then put the powdered stick and the betel nut in my mouth at the same time and CHEWED. It definitely has an effect, I felt dopey and euphoric, but I did not like it because it burnt THE FUCK out of my mouth, I was crook for some 3 days, due to the quite severe burns. It took about a week for the burns to heal to comfort, 2 weeks fully. Perhaps using less lime powder when you do this may help. Have fun bro. P.s don't swallow, chew and then slowly spit it out.

I dont think so strong lime dose as you used is nessessary. But it´s hard to judge how strong it is when it´s first time. Im definitley going to try this, at least once to see the effects.

Modest amounts, modest effects, modest irritation. If this is a drug, so is green tea -- if you drink enough, quickly enough.

Hmm, that mouth cancer and the looks of the mouth and teeth seems quite discusting.
Still, im going to try it to see the effects. I doubt i get cancer for trying it once. I better stash up on toothpaste.

I like your attitude Mateo.
"It causes cancer"
"Still I'm going to try it"
It made me laugh. I'm currently chain smoking cigarettes even though they cause cancer.
I'm working on it to those about to judge me. I don't care what people think anyway. It's my life after all.

Haha you won't need toothpaste, the lime cleaned my teeth to beautiful pearly whites. The burns though... it was a shitty week I'll tell ya that, but I don't regret it because I have now experienced it and I won't dissuade anyone else from the experience.

I was given some packets like the ones durian2008 described by a gas station owner. I enjoyed the mild psychoactive effects of the urinal cake tasting, cancer causing, caustic rocks. HOWEVER I did not enjoy the chemical burns I got from the lime. When my lip and tongue started swelling and skin started to peel it legitimately freaked me out for a bit.
That said, I would like to try fresh betal without the lime. Yeah I know the lime is supposed to greatly aid in the absorption of the actives but there's not a snow balls chance in hell I'll put lime in my mouth again.

How many packets did people have to eat, before the swelling?
Moderation doesn't help, if it usually burns most people.
