Plastic bags in the PC
    #20282346 - 07/16/14 05:52 PM (9 years, 6 months ago)

Just a quick question, can you pressure cook things inside of a plastic bag? For example, could I put a casing layer inside something like a rugular old garbage bag and sterilize it in the PC?  This may seem like a stupid question, but I have gone past quite a few posts of what looks to be people pressure cooking plastic bags...  Do they not melt?  What about chemicals from the plastic leeching into whatever you are sterilizing?  Any input would be greatly appreciated as I would like to know more about what you can sterilize in a PC.

garbage bag will melt, but oven-bag like the reynolds brand work fine.

Is there no risk of chemicals leeching from the bag into whatever material you are sterilizing?  I assume that is why there is a special type?

When you heat things such as plastic, small amounts of chemicals are released... That is fact.  I was just wondering if anyone factors that into weather or not to use bags.  I guess it would never be enough to ever cause any adverse effects, or would it?

That doesn't make them inherently safe. Plastics do leach chemicals, but in this modern society, chemical exposure is unavoidable. We can only minimize our exposure.

BPA is a nasty chemical which has very devastating effects on the endocrine system.

That's a WHOLE different conversation though eagle.

NO, an oven bag made for cooking IS NOT going to leech any chemicals. I have personally pressure cooked many oven bags, with NO bad chemicals leeched or harmful side effects were present...to answer the OP's question...

How do you know that NO bad chemicals were leeched?

Hmm.  I have wondered this same question.  I tried to research the reynolds oven bags.  They look plastic but are rated for like a 450 degree oven.  From my understanding PC's cook much lower then that... more like 275F.  Thats why they are cool, they use high pressure but lower heat to cook meat more thoroughly and evenly... any who, seems it should be kosher.  I might try soon and i'll let you know what i think!

Chemicals from plastics do get in to what ever you have in them. Heat is a catalyst for leaching.

However, whether or not the leeching happens on a scale that's harmful to humans is a matter of debate in a different forum

Whether it's enough to be harmful to mushroom cultivation is obvious. People have been using plastics in cultivation for a while and it seems to be ok.

I don't like the oven bags because they are soooo thin and fragile. I've had a few burst and quit using them.

This is exactly the kind input I was looking for.

On a side note... I was thinking of buying some "Reynolds" oven bags to sterilize my casing layer in my AA.  But, after what SpitballJedi said, I have decided to look for a different type of bag.  What type would you suggest?  Or maybe using more than one "Reynolds" brand oven bag would be sufficient?
