Habitat: South Florida on soil [?]
My mother sent me this picture that she's had from years ago, I've never seen the specimen, only these two pictures. I told her it was Ganoderma lucidum, but I've never seen such a strange shape to the fruitbody, and it looks like its on soil, but it could be burried wood? Any ideas, care to confirm or challenge my ID?

Ganoderma tsugae can seem like it's growing from the ground, but there's decaying wood under there! great pics. I agree w/ Ganoderma but to get to species, more info is needed.

Is the white part kind of fuzzy or velvety feeling instead of smooth.

Wish I had that info, this was sent to me years ago, and it has never quit waking me up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat wondering what this thing is for sure. What would it mean if it was fuzzy? Do you have an idea about something?

What tree was it growing from, how many pores per mm, what does the inside look like.....these are all things you would need to know in order to get to species.

If I zoom in really closely I do see fuzz, I called my mother for her to recollect this mushroom she encountered years ago and she said it was velvety on the edges, but doesn't remember teeth. Anyhow, riverdweller said its Ganoderma sp, and that was my original thought for this photo as well, oh well...

well i was wrong about the teeth just went and looked and i think it just looked like it when it was first starting to grow never took a close look at it after that but got some pictures. just thought it look like a mutant of one of these. but im prolly mistaken. most ganoderma ive seen have been shiny and smooth not fuzzy. though im no expert.

Your pics are of ganoderma so that's pretty good consensus. I've seen them have some odd shapes when they are young, but I've never seen them have more than one stem like hers did...

That would be rare. What features did you notice that made you decide resinaceum over applanatum?
Like, did you measure the pore surface, were other older specimen turning black with age, did you cut into it to notice if a resin oozed?
Idenitification is fun and often impossible w/o a complex study of it's characteristics.
