pastuerize or sterilize coir?
    #15177910 - 10/04/11 07:23 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

This is not my first go around, by far. I have always spawned to Hpoo and no longer have this readily available. Coir however is cheap and less then a block from my house.

I am not entirely educated as to why this needs pastuerization over sterillization being that it does not contain firefang? Coir as nutritious as it is, would contaminate without having the antibodies and beneficial bacterial that poo does...no?

AND...does this apply to coir as a casing layer (mixed with verm of course)...i have always used straight verm.

thank you in advance.

Pasteurize. Coir gets pasteurized so that most microorganisms are killed but not all, the remaining few give the coir extra defense against things like trich or cobweb simply by taking up space.

The theory is that  a sterilized sub. is a blank slate and is much easier for invaders to invade as compared to a pasteurized sub which will act as if shielded from outside contaminants.

Pretty sure you should pasteurize hpoo also but to each his own.

Here's the tek I've always used. It's not 100% true & proper pasteurization, but w/ coir+verm (+gypsum) you can get away w/ it.

Coir does not require true pasteurization, because it's pressured treated w/ heat to make the firm bricks.
I'm not 100% but they're formed into bricks around 2000 pounds per square inch.
