Today in psychedelic history (11/29)
    #13556276 - 11/29/10 08:10 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

  • 1953:  Alex Grey is born

Quote:

Alex Grey (born November 29, 1953) is an American artist specializing in spiritual and psychedelic art (or visionary art) that is sometimes associated with the New Age movement. Grey is a Vajrayana practitioner. His body of work spans a variety of forms including performance art, process art, installation art, sculpture, visionary art, and painting. Grey is a member of the Integral Institute. He is also on the board of advisors for the Center for Cognitive Liberty and Ethics, and is the Chair of Wisdom University's Sacred Art Department. He and his wife Allyson Grey are the co-founders of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, a non-profit institution supporting Visionary Culture in New York City.

Paintings

Grey’s paintings can be described as a blend of sacred, visionary art and postmodern art. He is best known for his paintings of glowing anatomical human bodies, images that “x-ray” the multiple layers of reality. His art is a complex integration of body, mind, soul, and spirit. The Sacred Mirrors, a life-sized series of 21 paintings, took 10 years to complete, and examines in detail the physical and metaphysical anatomy of the individual. "The inner body is meticulously rendered - not just anatomically precise but crystalline in its clarity". Many of his paintings include detailed representations of the skeleton, nervous system, cardiovascular system, and lymphatic system. Grey applies this multidimensional perspective to paint the universal human experience. His figures are shown in positions such as praying, meditating, kissing, copulating, pregnancy, birth and death. His work incorporates many religious symbols, including auras, chakras, and icons with geometric shapes and tessellations in natural, industrial, and multicultural situations. Grey’s paintings are permeated with an intense and subtle light that is rare in art history. “It is the light that is sublime in Grey’s oeuvre - which is the most important innovation in religious light since the Baroque - and that makes the mundane beings in them seem sublime, in every realistic detail of their exquisite being”.

Philosophy

Grey has also made his own contribution to the philosophy of art in his book The Mission of Art (1998). Therein, he promotes the possibility of the mystical potential of art: he argues that the process of artistic creation can (and should) play a role in the enlightenment of the artist. For him, the process of artistic creation holds the potential of transcending the limitations of the mind and more fully expressing the divine spirit. He also believes that art can induce within the viewer an elevated state wherein spiritual states of being are attained.

In an interview with Ken Wilber for Integral Naked, Grey described an experience of shared hallucination between himself and his wife, which led him to believe in spirituality and spiritual practice.

Reception

Painting and music groups

Grey's artwork has often been used by music groups on their album covers.

    * An album of David Byrne remixes called Visible Man featured Grey's artwork.
    * Michael Hedges's album Torched features one of Grey's "Holy Fire" paintings on the cover.
    * The liner notes for the Nirvana album In Utero included a reproduction of Grey's painting Muscle System (Pregnant Woman) among a series of photographs of the band.
    * The cover of the String Cheese Incident's album Untying the Not features Grey's work Cosmic Elf, commissioned specifically for the album.
    * Hip-hop group the Beastie Boys featured Grey's "Gaia" painting as well as his "Vision Crystal" image inside the booklet of their album "Ill Communication".
    * The metal band Tool has featured Grey's artwork as album artwork for their album Lateralus. He also executed the stage design for Tool for the associated tour that included massive reproductions of the album artwork as well as provide the artwork for the 2006 Tool album 10,000 Days and the computer-generated graphics for the video of the single Vicarious. Tool also used a few paintings from Alex on their 2007 tour of Europe, Asia, and North America.
    * In 2004 a live multimedia performance was recorded as a DVD titled Worldspirit - featuring the animated artwork and live spoken word of Alex Grey, coupled with the project direction and live music of Kenji Williams.
    * The alleged mystical properties of Grey's artwork are discussed in Stuart Davis' 2006 DVD Between the Music.
    * DJ/Producer Bassnectar has used Alex Grey's artwork for multiple album covers.
    * In 2008 and 2009, TELESMA performed Winter Solstice concerts at which Alex and Allyson Grey appeared on stage and painted new original pieces. A DVD of their first collaborative Winter Solstice concert with TELESMA called "Hearing Vision's LIVE" was released in June 2010. On December 18, 2010, Alex and Allyson Grey will again be "live painting" new original pieces with TELESMA at the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM) Full Moon Solstice Celebration.

In the media

Grey's artwork has been featured on the cover of Sub Rosa, Newsweek, High Times, Shaman's Drum, Shambhala Sun, Juxtapoz, Vision, Gnosis and The Healing Power of Neurofeedback: The Revolutionary LENS Technique for Restoring Optimal Brain Function.

The Discovery Channel included Grey in a feature on art and creativity in altered states.

The Viking Youth Power Hour interviewed Alex & Allyson Grey about the role of sacred art, the holy shenanigans of Burning Man, and the development of his process.

Grey's work and his Chapel of Sacred Mirrors gallery in New York City are featured in a 2006 DVD release CoSM The Movie, directed by Nick Krasnic.

Grey talks about his personal philosophy in the 2009 movie Cognition Factor.

In Variable Star, a science fiction novel written by Spider Robinson based on a story outline by Robert A. Heinlein, Robinson devotes several pages to his protagonist's discovery of Grey's Sacred Mirrors and Progress of the Soul series, and to using them to enhance meditation.

Collections

    * Transfigurations
    * Visions, 2003, a 2,000-copy limited edition collection of Grey's two hardcover books and a set of prints, all in an illustrated wooden case which folds out into an 'altar'

  • 1967:  Tord Svenson LSD lab bust

Quote:

March 5, 2008 (Req. No. 08-0758-F) (request for NADDIS record of deceased LSD chemist Tord Eric Svenson, specifically: "1.) Svenson's NADDIS Index or summary, pointing to - and constituting the practical means for accessing - records in DEA's Investigative Filing and Reporting System (IFRS); 2.) I do not request the associated IFRS records at this time, but only the Index.") Status: On May 5, 2008 DEA assigned a tracking number. On January 27, 2009, after conducting a search for Svenson's records, DEA responded that no records were found after a query of NADDIS/IFRS and requested more information on the subject, specifically "A specific event/geographical location (with specific dates) that the DEA participated in connection with Mr. Svenson." These criteria were provided on September 28, 2009, stating: "Attached is the result of a Social Security Death Index search, indicating that Tord E. Svenson's DOB is 1/7/37 6/7/37 and his SSN is 022-28-0985. it is likely that DEA has records relating to Svenson, for testimony in U.S. v. Timothy Scully, Nicholas Sand, and Lester Freidman (N.D. Cal. 1974) alleged that Svenson's clandestine LSD laboratory was investigated by IRS as part of a joint DEA-IRS inverstigation. The following information (from the pubic record) may be helpful in locating Svenson's NADDIS record and other responsive material to which NADDIS points: Tord Svenson was arrested in Boston, Masachusetts on November 29, 1967 in a drug lab reported by the press as an LSD operation. He was also known as Todd Sorenson, Tom Wilson and Ralph Conner. His associates included Ronald Hadley Stark, Richard Kemp, Michael Boyd Randall, Thelma Berg, Lester Freidman, and Ed May. He used the alias Todd Sorenson during the period of 1971-1972, when he worked at Laboratorie Le Clocheton near Brussels, Belgium, later investigated by DEA." DOJ/OIP remanded an appeal to DEA (Appeal No. 09-1294). DEA on August 5, 2010 restated it was unable to locate Svenson's NADDIS. (Comment: This request was made on behalf of Dr. Tim Scully.)

  • 2001:  George Harrison dies

Quote:

George Harrison, MBE (25 February 1943 – 29 November 2001) was an English rock guitarist, singer-songwriter, actor and film producer who achieved international fame as lead guitarist of The Beatles. Often referred to as "the quiet Beatle", Harrison embraced Indian mysticism, and helped broaden the horizons of the other Beatles, as well as those of their Western audience. Following the band's break-up, he had a successful career as a solo artist and later as part of the Traveling Wilburys, and also as a film and record producer. Harrison is listed at number 21 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".

Although most of The Beatles' songs were written by Lennon and McCartney, Harrison, also a songwriter, generally contributed 1-2 songs per record from the With The Beatles onwards. His later compositions with The Beatles include "Here Comes the Sun", "Something" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". By the time of the band's break-up, Harrison had accumulated a backlog of material, which he then released as the acclaimed and successful triple album All Things Must Pass in 1970, from which came two singles: a double A-side single, "My Sweet Lord" backed with "Isn't It a Pity", and "What Is Life". In addition to his solo work, Harrison co-wrote two hits for Ringo Starr, another former Beatle, as well as songs for the Traveling Wilburys—the supergroup he formed in 1988 with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison.

Harrison embraced Indian culture and Hinduism in the mid 1960s, and helped expand Western awareness of sitar music and of the Hare Krishna movement. With Ravi Shankar he organised a major charity concert with the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh.

Besides being a musician, he was also a record producer and co-founder of the production company HandMade Films. In his work as a film producer, he collaborated with people as diverse as the members of Monty Python and Madonna. He was married twice, to the model Pattie Boyd in 1966, and to the record company secretary Olivia Trinidad Arias in 1978, with whom he had one son, Dhani Harrison. He was a close friend of Eric Clapton. He is the only Beatle to have published an autobiography, with I Me Mine in 1980. Harrison died of lung cancer in 2001.

Death

Cancer diagnosis

Harrison developed throat cancer, which was discovered in 1997 after a lump on his neck was analysed. He attributed it to his smoking in the 1960s. He was successfully treated with radiotherapy. Early in May 2001, it was revealed that he had undergone an operation at the Mayo Clinic to remove a cancerous growth from one of his lungs. In July of that year, it was reported that Harrison was receiving radiotherapy for a brain tumour at a clinic in Switzerland.

Lederman affair

In November 2001, Harrison began radiotherapy at Staten Island University Hospital in New York City for lung cancer which had metastasised to his brain. In a complaint later brought on behalf of Harrison's estate, it was alleged that while under the care of the hospital, Dr. Gilbert Lederman, a radiation oncologist, repeatedly revealed Harrison's confidential medical information during television interviews and forced him to autograph a guitar. The complaint alleges that Dr. Lederman and his family came to visit Harrison and began singing, and that, in laboured breaths, Harrison said, "Please stop talking." Later, Dr. Lederman allegedly had his son play the guitar for George. The complaint alleges that after the performance, Dr. Lederman asked Harrison for an autograph on the guitar, and that Harrison responded, "I do not even know if I know how to sign my name any more." Dr. Lederman then allegedly took Harrison's hand and guided his hand along to spell his name while encouraging him by saying, "Come on, George. You can do this. G-E-O...". The suit was ultimately settled out of court under the condition that the guitar be "disposed of".

Decline and death

Despite the treatments and operations, Harrison died on 29 November 2001 at a Hollywood Hills mansion that was once leased by McCartney and was previously owned by Courtney Love. The cause of death was listed on his Los Angeles County death certificate as "metastatic non-small cell lung cancer". He was cremated at Hollywood Forever Cemetery and his ashes were scattered in the Ganges River by his close family in a private ceremony according to Hindu tradition.  He left almost £100 million in his will.

In 2002, on the first anniversary of Harrison's death, the Concert for George was held at the Royal Albert Hall; it was organised by Eric Clapton and included performances by many of Harrison's musical friends, including Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. The profits from the concert went to Harrison's charity, the Material World Charitable Foundation.

15th anniversary of the death of George Harrison today.  I remember that I had been on homemade mushrooms, that I had learned to grow from The Shroomery, on the night of his death.  I had a long, long, long meditation session and I'm almost 100% certain that I had been listening to some Beatles.

R.I.P. George.  Thank you.

Well I didn't know that George had died at the time I was tripping, Jdawg. But still it's an interesting coincidence to me.

Anyway, today is the 55th anniversary of the Tord Svenson LSD lab bust. It was the second LSD lab bust in as many days, as they had busted Frank Baird the previous day.
