he Tiger Woods scandal is the biggest sports story in years, but for Mike Heffner it’s business as usual. Heffner is the president of Lelands, a New York-based sports memorabilia auction house that deals in rare, big-ticket items like Babe Ruth’s first homerun ball in Yankee Stadium. The firm has also sold Tiger Woods collectibles, like a tournament-worn shirt ($20,000) and a scorecard autographed by Tiger and other golf greats ($5,000). But as the Woods scandal grabs headlines, Heffner has no plans to raise or lower prices on the golfer’s items.

“I don’t think it’s going to effect the market that greatly,” Heffner said of the scandal. “Other athletes have been through these trials and tribulations, and they’re remembered for what they did in their field. He didn’t get caught cheating on the golf course; he got caught cheating at home.” Heffner said the one exception to that rule is O.J. Simpson, whose memorabilia “plummeted” after he was tried for double murder.

Heffner said Woods memorabilia has always carried a premium because of the scarcity factor; the golfer is known as a “tough autograph,” so even signed golf balls go for $1,000 or more. Team Tiger has never flooded the market with items. The media circus that’s sure to follow Woods for the foreseeable future will likely cause greater scarcity. “I’d say he’ll be more elusive when it comes to signing, which, in turn, will make the value even greater,” Heffner said.

If one of his clients was interested in buying Woods memorabilia, Heffner said he would recommend waiting for things to settle down, to avoid inflated prices. Still, he said, there are items he wishes he had in his possession immediately — namely, a very famous golf club. “That golf club that went through the back of his window -– I think that thing is worth about a quarter of a million dollars if someone could get a hold of it,” he said. “I was telling a friend the other day, I wished I had it.”
