stoned ramblings about eras

you know how people always say that the sixties were all about hippies, and the seventies were the disco days, and the eighties were all about glam rock an shit...well...does that mean that the nineties were the skater days? is it still too early to tell? and what are they gonna call the period we're in now? we can't be the 'teens' cause we're not there yet...and, I dunno, the 'ones' or some shit just sounds gay as fuck
maybe this'll be the generation that stops stereotyping themselves

but then again - it's not like anyone I knew ever tried to stereotype the era I lived through while we were in it...we just kinda did our own thing, and to hell with whatever labels people tried to put on us
maybe nobody ever really gets a label for their time period until their predecessors looked back on things after the fact
did our parents know they were 'hippies' at the time

not that I was ever part of the 'in' crowd anyway
I guess whatever they decide to call the people that grew up in the nineties - I ain't gonna be one of em regardless

It interesting to note how our arbitrary base ten number system superimposes a distinction on our culture eras. The same thing happens for the centurys.
Without this type of number system perhaps our culture would seem more continuous with less distinction between eras.
edit - BTW, I still rock the flannel and short sleeve over long sleeve look.

which makes me wonder if the 'oddballs' from my parents generation ever regretted not getting into the swing of things themselves

I'm pretty sure I got this all figured out now that I've thought about it fora minute: - every generation has their stereotype
- they all know what it is when it happens
(the hippies knew it, just like the skaters did)
- the emo fags are the phase we're going through right now
- there will always be people that follow the trends
- and a lot of us that don't
- the ones that do - take pride in being a part of it
- the ones that don't - take pride in the fact that they weren't a part of it
- and these trends will continue on indefinitely from one generation to the next...regardless
- because it's the very nature of the beast for youth to create their own unique identity
- and it's the essence of the sheeple to conform to the norm
it's a viscous cycle I suspect the human race asa whole will likely never outgrow

This is the generation where we begin to pay the dues of destroying our environment and using up the earth's resources faster than they can be replenished. It is the turning point where we finally begin to face the consequences of our long-term actions, a point of no return where changes must be made, or else we will destroy our planet and ourselves. I believe this is how our current era will be defined.
