The surface area difference you'll get from pushing 4" down to 3" won't affect your yield really.  Depending on the balance, a larger surface area will lose moisture faster so I'd stay at 4".  This would allow you introduce more FAE on the effective fruiting surface.  I'm only saying that though because you're keeping it in the tub, if you were to fruit the whole sub block like a cake in a greenhouse or something the extra surface area helps.

Since I already sent you a PM with some info, and you're asking it here, I'm going to quote it.  I know quoting a PM is against the rules.. but I think in this circumstance its ok, if anyone disagrees I'll remove it.  It wouldn't hurt for others to see this:

A quick way to do(and learn) the math would be to go

http://www.metric-conversions.org/

You want to figure out what the total volume of your mix is gonna be, so if your total is gonna be 7.5 quarts, put that into the volume converter and see how many cubic inches that is.  Divide that by 4, and that is the area that the bottom of your tray needs to be.  Bring a tape measure to the store(or where-ever you're looking for the tray), find the width and length of the tray, multiply it, and if its close to the area that you found above.. it'll work.

If you're doing a mono, make sure you have enough head room, with a 4" sub depth make sure you got at the very least 8" of space.

Thanks so much for this info... I have searched literaly hundreds of posts and this answers the question of figuring out exactly how big a monotub you need for the amount of substrate you are planning on using perfectly!!!
