Auditory/sensory synesthesia following trip?
    #7794760 - 12/24/07 04:34 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Ever since a mushroom experience a couple of months ago, I've been experiencing what I can only describe as a strange kind of auditory/sensory form of synesthesia. This happens when I'm in a completely sober state, and usually near the end of the day when I'm starting to get tired. For example, if someone suddenly knocks on my door, I feel an instantaneous jolt of electricity shoot through my body. I also have a central heater in my home, and if the metal pings or creaks as it heats, I experience the same sensation. The feeling happens instantaneously, not as a response to the sound, but as if I'm feeling the sound itself. And it only happens when the sound in question is unexpected.

Has anybody else experienced this? Any advice?

Does there seem to be logical ratios of bodily sensation to intensity of sound? For instance, will a louder noise produce a greater vibratory shock than a smaller one?

If so, I think I have the same thing happen to me. It too happens to me when my body is running low on energy for the day. It is almost as if I am vibrating like a speaker, like what I'd feel like if I was a speaker and the sound was coming out of me.

There could be many reasons for this, however I think its basis comes in the form of being able to accept and being more open or aware to your enviorment, OR you are open to different things because when you are tired you kind of "fill in" what may have been too little or too much sensory informaton with whatever you, as a unique individual, happens to percieve it as.

Life seems to have dreamlike qualities in sober states, every know and then.

It is something to talk about, nothing to worry about and is one of those things that make the experience still contain good ol', mysterious qualia.

I would describe it more as a short, quick, electric zap, like the sound itself is translating into an electric zap in my brain which then radiates out into my body. It's far from pleasant.

synaesthesia is part of the normal brain operation.
we learn it out of practice as kids, while refining our body coordination, language and other personal and social skills.

but from meditation and or psychedelic experience,
we can reacquaint with waking sensory crossover, which is more the realm of dreaming consciousness.

Synaesthesia is related to gestalt experiencing, i.e. more than one sense experienced together (recalled memory content is a sense as well) , i.e. all at once type consciousness.

in a stream of all at once sensory awareness, synaesthesia is the norm - many unique experiences are essentially combinatorial.

now if you happen to take some psychedelic, and afterwards find it startling that synaesthesia seems to be creeping into "normal" waking life, take less note of the shock of it and more note of the nature of it. (i.e. less reaction and more observation)

You may have opened something up temporarily that can connect you to more youthful memories.

Unless you are interested in this sort of thing, you will soon seem to lose the facility and return to regular habits that keep the senses isolated, and that keep your habits more socialized.
