Spent Brewery Grains

I just found a steady supply of spent brewery grains. if anyone has tried using these grains, any input would be very helpful. The batch I just got has oat flakes, 4 kinds of malt, rice hulls and yeast. I'm going to try a pf tek jar, and do a pint jar with this medium instead of rye berries. The pf tek I'm going to use 2 parts verm and 1 part spent grains. Please anyone, any input of any kind will be greatly appreciated, any ideas are welcome. Thanks much.

Whoa, cool paper, thanks for that. I'd like to experiment a bit with them as well.

This comes from experiance as a Brewer rather than a mushroom grower so take everything with a grain of salt. First your grains should not have any yeast in them the grains are used before the boil, the yeast after.
They will be loaded with lactobacillus though. The lacto loves the mash temperatures and will sour a batch of grains in less than 24 hours so you may have to alter the ph and pressure cook the hell out of it.
Also, I am not sure pf tek will work because the grains have lots of protien and nitrogen but few carbohydrates left. Most of the starch and sugars are taken by the brewers for their beer.
I have heard of people using sbg mostly to bulk out sawdust, and typically they use it like bran, mostly sawdust, some sbg and gypsum.
You can contact Great Lakes Brewing Company, I understand that they use theirs to grow oysters and shitakes.
As always, your mileage may vary, and have fun experimenting.

I brew myself, and I have always just thrown my spent mash on my compost pile. I haven't grown any mushrooms in quite a while but it is on the way and I will be adding small amounts of spent grain to my sub. I will have plenty of it, so why not use it. I think the most important part will be drying it properly or there will be a lot of mold growth.

I have frozen it for baking with and it seems to preserve it well. Easier than drying in my opinion. Freeze then mix and pressure cook.

How about just draining them and pc in bags? Shouldn't that be ok for a while?

We are working with a brewery now and have had some great success with the grains. We have to really rinse them first but colonization times are even greater than rye berry! We use a press to squeeze them to field capacity in burlaps.

I've heard of spent grain bread. It sounds pretty tasty.

Are you using 100% grains for bulk sub?

We use 100% organic rye berry for our farm but using beer grains for testing for mushroom materials and some personal edible grows. So far, reishi, blue and yellow oysters colonized quickly with no problems.

Hello my fellow Molecule. I too have access to used brewery grains and am new to mycology. Any information you could share would be much appreciated. ✌️💗⚛️

Care to share your grain prep method? From what I understand, the spent grains I have access to are very wet. Are you doing any pre-sterilization prep?
