WillSolvem said: water is the catalyst for the mycelium tissue to become mushroom fruit body tissue, aside from the water content of the substrate (always a constant 65%) which by the time it is being cased has already been captured or reserved, the casing provides a reservoir of its own that can be used to move more tissue into fruits, then it stands that overall water content by volume should be as high as possible while still allowing air presence should be sought, while microwave moisture tests by volume (500ml was used) showed the polymer crystals held 20% higher water content over vermiculite (+/-5%) I don't think I would be surprised to see that translated into a20% higher conversion into mushroom tissue...
Remember; no organic matter means no pasteurization and no contaminations
Willsolvem's Polymer Water Crystal Casing tek:
Items needed: Polymer water crystals (PWC) Vermiculite Hydrated lime Gypsum Measuring cup Mixing bowl Water (filtered if possible)
The mix: *This will make 3 quarts of casing material (perfect for a 18 gallon tub @.5in) 1500ml (6 cups) water 15ml (1Tbsp) PWC 200ml gypsum 1000ml (4 cups) vermiculite Hydrated lime
The technique: First start by treating the water to be used by boiling and cooling, measure out 1500ml (6 cups) and treat with hydrated lime until PH reaches desired level then dissolve 200ml of gypsum into water.
Grab your bag of WPC and measure out 15ml (1tbsp) into the mixing bowl

Then add the treated water and let stand for 45 minutes

Next mix in 1000ml (4 cups) of DRY vermiculite and mix, the WPC will hydrate the vermiculite perfectly

Then case and fruit like normal

Heres a picture of the crystals I use, this one pound bag makes over 16 gallons of hydrated crystals

Other uses for PWC: Add a quart of hydrated crystals (not treated with hydrated lime) to any bulk sub while adding spawn for better substrate water retention Use in printing area to prolong printing windows found with pans Add hydrated untreated crystals to any perlite being used for humidity control, you can then hydrate/rehydrate perlite with a spray bottle and the PWC will absorb any water the perlite didn't
I hope this helps, good luck.

Neat idea, and nice writeup!
For those of us who don't have litmus paper handy, do you have any guidelines for how much hydrated lime you end up putting in there?

I don't I'm sorry, this is because the starting PH of the water will vary, I have public water and depending on the time of year they use different sources for the towns waster supply, I don't use the hydrated lime in a PWC casing anymore, I didn't feel it's necessary as it is usually included to prevent contam/competing spores from germinating on a organic substance and eating it (peat moss), since theres to organic matter to promote/sustain contams with this casing layer why include it if the mycelium only tolerates it at best. I included in the tek for the cultivators who can't stand the thought of an unpasteurized casing (the use of hydrated lime it's considered chemical pasteurization).

Another strange casing supplement i read about was activated charcoal.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/738105
It said it was used for Agaricus Bisporous, i wonder how it would work with cubes being ph neutral.
I want to try a mix of your PWC, Activated charcoal, and verm.

Hmm, yeah, good point -- the purpose of pH balancing a casing is to prevent mold, so if you're using a casing that mold won't grow on there's no need for it.

Sounds interesting.
I would worry the casing wouldn't be airy enough (i.e. too dense and heavy) and that it might actually lead to increased contams.
Still, I really like the idea. Can't wait to see everyone's results. Plus I think I have some of these crystals out in my gardening stuff.

They both (PWCs and vermiculite) are anti compacting agents, you could stand on this mix and it won't compact, if you can't find any let me know and I'll shoot you some, I still have your addy
