AMORPHOUS DIATOMACEOUS EARTH (ADE)
    #3542452 - 12/25/04 04:54 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Excellent addition to CASING mixtures & in small % to Substrates
AMORPHOUS DIATOMACEOUS EARTH (ADE)

D. E., Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth, is a sedimentary rock consisting of the exoskeletons of algae-like plants (Diatoms) ranging in size typically from 10 to 200 microns. The skeletal structure can contain up to 80% to 90% voids.

Diatomite?s porous structure, low density, and high surface area result in industrial applications as a filtration media for various beverages, inorganic and organic chemicals, and as an absorbent.

Ingestion of amorphous diatomaceous earth is not toxic to mammals. Rats fed a daily diet containing 5% freshwater diatomaceous earth show no abnormalities after 90 days (Bertke 1964).

Dairy farms sometimes feed their animals food containing 1 to 2% diatomaceous earth to control worms and other internal parasites (Allen 1972). Impoverished humans add "fossil flour" to their baked goods in order to stretch their flour supply (Cummins 1975).

It is so safe for use on food that the FDA has exempted diatomaceous earth from requirements of fixed residue levels when added to stored grain (Fed. Reg. 1961). The U.S. EPA also allows its use in food storage and processing areas (Fed. Reg. 1981).

This product is untreated, unheated agricultural food grade freshwater D.E (not the D.E. used in swimming pool water filtration). It contains 12 trace minerals including 19% calcium and 33% silica.

Diatomite will absorb up to 150% of its own weight in fluids and slowly release them.

I wonder how well it would "ADE" us in growing bulk materials... =)

Since it has large surface area & contains 80 - 90% voids, it absorbs moisture (up to 150% of its weight) as good as verm. Then releases it on demand (as mys sucks up moisture)& it rehydrates as fast as verm.

A few % in a substrate does wonders for my FOAF. As much as 10% in a casing layer - also does wonders for maintaing moisture content.

It also kills bugs in gardens. It has very sharp edges that abrade the insect's protective waxy coating, as I recall. Is this stuff OK for lungs? A really good dust mask may be in order.

As with any large amounts of micro-fine bulk powder, a dust mask is always wise thing(even wheat flour)if you are in a room full of it, loose.

Out of the bag, I use a wheat scoop to add it to a a pot, with water in it. Once wet,it is a slurry. I then boil it, which super pasturizes it, as well as fully hydrates it.

BTW, if you eat any USA flour, grain or cereal product (flour, breads, cereal, etc), you have been ingesting this stuff in minute amounts all your life. For the last 50 years, it is added to wheat, grain & cerial product storage & trans-shipment silo's, to minimize tiny bug infestations.

Once added, it cannot be removed & is processed right along with the grains, into flour etc, etc.

It's safe. Otherwise, this would not be allowed by EPA, FDA & USDA.

while i concur on the relative safety merits of ADE it appalls me that anyone could possibly have their head so far up their ass as to make that statement with a straight face.

no offense intended.

LOL......

True.....in a way

Why I believe the :eek:reality:eek: is this, so stated in the same post.

>>>>BTW, if you eat any USA flour, grain or cereal product (flour, breads, cereal, etc), you have been ingesting this stuff in minute amounts all your life. Not so much that it is "approved" by those agencies, But given that everyone has been  :eek:eating:eek: minute amounts of this stuff for well over a generation, I believe it is SAFE. :stoned: Not their "endorsement" of it.

I recently picked up a few pounds of this at a local nursery...I'd send some out to those who wish to experiment. PM with interests...

Is the diatomaceous earth found in nursery the same as found in pool supplies???

would this stuff aid in controlling possible bug eggs in a compost that has not been pasteurized but rather composted using the long composting methods outlined in TMC?

I added some to the last batch of horse manure/compost I made up. I noticed prior to pasteurization I had the substrate at field moisture capacity. After pasteurization(in sealed quart jars by my usual method) when I made up the bins, it seemed a bit on the wet side. I went ahead and used it, so I'll let you know how it goes. Anything that continues to hold moisture during the cropping cycle seems like a good deal. Thanks for the tip.
