What do you have against modern society? 1

A lot of people here have something against modern society.
Culture these days is stupid, they say. People are more evil, technology is bad, and everything smells a little off.
Of course, lifespans are longer than ever, to many people the threat of being invaded by another tribe, or mauled by animals is so rare as to be insignificant. Many diseases or disablilities are very treatable. We have free access to TONS of art, entertainment and information.
People see bad television shows, or celebrity culture, and act like bad taste was invented yesterday, as though people didn't make crude jokes, lame art or discuss trivial things before the 20th century. They act as though crime is something that didn't used to happen in the past. As though being an innercity gangster today is somehow far more morally wrong than a thug in any other time in history.
I don't understand how someone can talk about finding beauty in everything, and then go on to say that they hate cities because they are filled with commercialism. That tall buildings are all ugly, and that anything loses all artistic value as soon as the slightest profit motive is attached to it. That even if a television commercial is highly inventive, interesting, and funny, it has a dark evil core ("If Bill Hicks says so, it must be true.").
I find that there's a certain amount of arrogance in this opinion. People want to separate themselves from, and be superior to, the driving forces in our culture.
It may be kind of an extension of the "If I hate what's cool, then I'm even cooler than what's cool" way of thinking. (If you've ever hung out with sceney indie rock kids, you know what I'm talking about).

I like to live in my own little world, its better here no categorizing or stereotyping . Modern Society in my opinion has lost sight of anything remotely worth working towards along time ago, now its all about profit and how popular you can become .

In all honesty I never put much thought into my previous post, I just think societies views on whats important is somewhat tainted.

At no time in all the history of mankind, has so much porn been available to so many for so little effort. God bless the internet!

My only problem with modern society is the lack of honor, but that is more directed towards America.

Not to generalize, whats important to me would be to focus on raising attention to things that actually have an effect on us as a nation, such as the outstanding cost to even buy the needed items to sustain life and the steady decrease of jobs. Then take a look at a magazine such as *People*(Yes the name implies that it is certainly about people). But no one of any real importance just some woman or man who can memorize some lines and cry and was giving a million or more dollars for doing so. Our nation puts more energy into the "In Culture" then anything else.

"A lot of people here have something against modern society.

BINGO! I think you just hit the nail on the head with this one.
Generally speaking, we are brought up in a 'negative' environment... Hostility, critticism, etc...
So, we grow up being our own, and society's, worst crittics.
The fact that we have longer lifespans means that we can continue adding such negative ideals out there, for longer periods.
It's a vicious feedback loop...
Although, there are PLENTY of neat cool things out there to experience, the tendancy to focus on less pleasing things appears paramount to many...
It's as if these negativities have more 'pull'...
Like when you are a kid... no matter how many times it is reinforced that you have positive things about you, it only takes a moment of being "bullied" by someone who shoots you down to alter, sometimes quite significantly, your perceptions of yourself.
It's conditionning.
And it is probably the general aspect of society as it is right now, that influences its newcomers.
What is that ratio I heard..?
It takes something like 10 positive remarks to curtail 1 negative remark?
The concept is there, even if I didn't get the saying right...
So, as you can see, on a larger scale, you don't need too many negative thoughts to produce a significant impact.

Really good topic Phluck. Its an interesting thought. Things are better than ever. Things are worse then ever. In one part of the world we invent the remote control, making it possible to watch countless channels of media meanwhile elsewhere we invent remote detonation devices for bombs to wipe out the places we are watching in the documentaries.
We desire the constant battle - the ongoing struggle propels us towards higher, lighter experiences. Without effort we could not know ease. Without our survival being threatened we would not seek immortality. The world is a very perfect place. I find it interesting that a common thread within the new age movement is the idea of acceptance and yet, many people who align themselves within this frequency are some of the most rejecting people out there. Against so many things. We talk about embracing change and yet every step of the way we fight development. We say that 'this is wrong' and in the next sentence we teach that god is in everything.
When everything is an essential element moving us towards a greater experience how can anything be bad? Sure, we may totally wipe out all the forests in the world, completely empty the oceans of beauty and fill it with polution... but then what happens? Maybe man will join in a concerted effort for once. Wouldn't that be a miracle?! We have no reason to fear the end of the world however we can expect something close to that extent in order to create the vital stepping stone towards humanities utopia.

Our culture has much to offer, but like others have said, I, too, live in my own little world. But one thing that really bugs me are the lies, hypocrisy and general pettiness I see everywhere.....

Without lies we would not seek truth we regard so highly. Therfore we must love the deception.

This culture is the result of a collective mindset we all contribute too. Only through externalising our ignorant patterns can we understand what it is we truly desire. We say "we hate bush" and its the same war mongering attitude that he lives within. We're all the same. We're all doin it. Just nobody likes to admit it cause we're all so high and mighty and righteous. Its not me. Its him. Its them. Its this.

Lost sight? When did we have sight?
In prehistoric times? Were cavemen more honorable? They were killing one another over petty things as well.
The desires to be popular and wealthy are human nature. There are no societies that lack greed, petty disputes, and people that are loved and hated.
You can even see the same power struggles in other species. Male apes strive to be dominant in their groups so that they can mate with as many females as possible. Wolves battle one another to lead the pack. Dolphins pick on the smaller, stupider porpoises just for fun.
If humans used to be above this stuff, they would have briefly been that way, and then lost those traits. When was this, and how do you even know such a time existed?

I think we need to start talking in 'WE' more often. Assuming oneness. Letting go of the division. Recognising that if a dynamic exists it exists in all of us. And 'LETS'. Lets start moving as a team.
