Vegatable growers thread. (Spring is coming)
    #2336466 - 02/15/04 02:57 AM (19 years, 11 months ago)

I grow a lot of my own vegtables and herbs in my garden, and I
suspect some of you do too.

well, that time has come around again, to get busy and start
to get seeds together for starting. So far I have some sweetcorn,
and some red onion sets.

This will be my first time growing sweet corn, and as this is a mostly american site, I wonder if anyone can advise me on the best ways to grow sweet corn ?

Also any tips on other things to grow would be great.

I will be growing tomatoes, potatoes, marrows, french beans,
swis chard, lettuce, carrots, and peas mainly.

So any other suggestions would be nice, some thing more interessting.

Has anyone grown edible mushrooms along side their veg?
If so what, and were

If you like you should grow some cuccumbers and some watermellon. Peppers would also be neat to grow and watch mature.

I am not so sure about the specs. on sweet corn, but if you do a search on google you should get plenty of info.

If you use straw as mulch around your veggies lay it down extra thick.
You could plant oyster mushrooms and Stropharia Ragust anulata(SRA).
I am going to be growing vegies and herbs as well this year to go along withthe mushroom buisness. Doing it farmer market style this year. We are making up a list of veggies right now. So when we figure it all out I will let you know.
As for corn. For the home I would make a planting mound with a good compost and fertilzer. Plant three to four plants per mound. This is the old native american style of growing corn. The Incas and Mayans also grew them this way.

GreyStreet:: Peppers are a nice idea, so I got two sorts today.
I'm unsure about melons, as I don't have a glass house, but when
I get one, I'll be sure to try some.

AFungitobewith: Good idea about a deep straw mulch, I'll be trying that, I have some
Button spawn to try, as well as plenty of oyster spawn both Pleurotus Pulmonarius
and Pleurotus ostreatus, but hadn't thought of trying them on the ground.
I'll have to try to source  some Stropharia Ragust anulata, as it seems
like a good species to use in this situation.

Great tips on the corn growing  this is the stuff I'm looking for. As
I was always told corn must be grown in large blocks for better cross pollination,
but this method is annoying, as it takes up one large area, I like this idea of mounds
of 4 or so plants, as i can space these around the garden. So thanks for that.

centrum: Good luck with those, I need a glass house, maybe I'll make a poly tunnel.

Picked up a few seeds today at a garden center, I don't think I have everything
yet, but enough to start a plan. I want to find some more interesting tomatoes
some Courgettes and something new, What are common north american veg?
I only just noticed that Gherkins are a form of marrow, so maybe I'll try those, do
they grow in northern north america? as thats closer to my own climate zone.

I already have a lot of herbs in 9cm pots that I over wintered so
I'll add those to existing herb containers and my herb border.

Left to right, top to bottom.

Yellow dwarf french beans(Brittle beurre),  Marzano tomatoes, more dwarf french
beans  (borlotto di vigevano), Chillis(Piccante di cayenna)  Peas (Canoe).

Parsnips, Sweet corn (jubilee) More chillis (lombardo) Agaricusdry spawn, Salad onions.

Potatoes (nicola), red onion sets,  and potatoes (Carlingford)

Most vegetables can be cared for like any other flowering plant. Good draining soil with N in veg and P in flower.

Anyone have any experience growing garlic? All I know is that it is sort of a lilly that requires full sun

Garlic needs a feee draining sandy soil, and full sun as well.
Its a bit too damp and cold in my climate zone to grow it well.

You should be able to grow garlic just about anywhere. Have you tried planting in the fall an harvesting in the late spring early summer? Sometimes you have to pick it early if its a wet year. Also garlic varieties may take a few years to get used to and be happy with where they are growing.

you guys should look into growing potatoes. seed potatoes are extremley cheap, and you get about 10x the weight of seed potatoes in nice fresh ones. i plan on building vertical columns about 6 feet high out of my garden bed that will be for the potatoes to grow in. then when its harvest time i dont have to dig up the entire plot and smash my shovel through potatoes....i can just knock my tower over and pick em out.

other veggies:
i reccomend broccoli. it grows very fast and seems to be very resistant to pests (ie. deer, bugs, dogs, kids next door)

and if your gonna do tomatoes. do sweet 100 or sweet millions. its a hybrid cherry tomatoe. i have had plants with about 30 or 40 tomatoes on them before. its like picking grapes!

potatoes does miracles to the soil. i have potatoes here and there among herbs and vegatables. very easy plant, just stick a potatoe in the ground and it grows up

whats new this spring would be squash. estragon and wild strawberry, there is prolly gonna be more havent gotten that far yet. from before i grow well alot of things, too many to list here, i would also like to start up with some fruits something i have been thinkin about for a few years now.

Yes, I have two sorts of potaotoe for this year, they
make a great ground breaker crop i.e if you have a new
bed, there one of the best first plants to use.
as they condition the soil weel for future crops.
I shall be making a new bed today, ready for potaotes,
or i had paned too, its just started snowing

Shriek, I got a packet of squash seeds yesterday, so they'll be something new to me this years as well.

i  balme Glowing 11, as she is always talking about butter squash soup

Diatomaceous Earth is good for keeping slugs and snails at bay
for sure, but it doesnt beat chickens at pest controll

Ok, Dont expect 2 much its all early dayz (about 2 weeks)
First we have some seedlings all sorts the developed ones on the right are morning glory of some sort. Amongst watermelon and other veg are not yet large enough to see tobacco I dont smoke it but Interesting to grow.

Now Eggplant ,lettus, capsicum & one asparagus sorry b`out the Image quality.

Another shithouse shot for ya but it shows the Irrigation its just one 13mm pipe up the middle but I need to have 2 pipes running up the sides to get enough water on all the plants.

Notice not much mulch you dont allways need it but its great to attract worms
and save water but we have a automatic pump set up to a creek down the bottom of the property so when I get the other pipe set up she`ll be a` ok.
Ill get some better Images when its all a bit more mature.
I say anybody who is interested just read a little about the seasons and how to grow shit then get off ya computer chair and do it it`s too easy!

Nice
I just spent the morning digging over a
new bed for potatoes, so all my beds are ready now.
Just need the weather to warm up a little, and I'll
start planting seeds.

i'm going to earth up my potatoes this year, as it
makes a huge difference to the amount you crop.

Earthing up is planting the potatoes in trenches, and
as the green growth comes up, you earth up the sides of
the shoot, burrying it more and more as it grows.
