Small volume straw pasteurisation tutorial [not realy a growlog].

Put the straw and/or dung into an oven tray thats deep enougth
to fit the amount of straw and/or dung required.




Then pour warm water over the straw and/or dung, until
its deep enougth to submerge the straw  and/or dung into.




Submerge it by placeing
something onto it thats heavy enougth to sink it. I use wall tiles
for this, but you can use a variety of items. Then place in the
oven at 170?F / 75?C  for one hour.

Don?t exceed 170?F / 75?C,  the temperature should be held stable
by your ovens own thermostate.  After 1 or 2 hour take the baking tray
out and place it at an angle that allows it to drain of excess water,
1 hour is normally enougth. After it?s cold (might take several hours)
you can spawn it.





Once drained its ready to use.



You can then move the straw to another tray, and spawn
it, here i used 500ml of millet spawn.




You then mix the spawn and straw together, but dont compact is too much, just
lightly firm it. And i always add a thin layer of unspawned straw to the top.

Now the straw is fully colonised, it's time to case.



Here I'm using, Multipurpose compost(untreated, unfertilized, peat free)
and Verm  50/50 with a hand full of crushed oyster shell (the sort you
find at farm stores in the chicken feed section)

Mixed up and nuked in an 800w microwave for 2 mins on full, shaken
and nuked again for another 3 mins on full, then cooled.



Then a layer is spread over the straw. I like to pour it
on around the edges first, as the shrinking straw creates an air gap
there. This i do so that it fills the air gap, and sits a bit thicker
all around the edge(about 1 to 2 inches), making it less likely for
pins to form there, and herds them towards the middle of the casing.

Then I give it a good spray with sprng water and h2o2
rebag, and place back into the incubator for a few days.

The casing layer is now colonised enougth to fruit from, a little
too far actually, as there are pins forming in the lower left section.
This is due to light pollution.



So into the fruiting chamber, next update soon :smile2:

The mask is for filtering correct? Do you just poke a bunch of holes underneath of it?

Yeah, i just glue it on, then cut out the bit beneath the mask.
Before i was glueing on strips of tyvek, but i thought id give the masks
a try. Hopefully they'll do an ok job.

i noticed you use wbs to spawn, can you use PF Tek style jars for the same thing?

Yes, you just need to break them up or grate them.
I much preffer millet though, as its falls apart
with ease, with limited mycelium damage.

Great idea!

I find pasteurizing straw in a big pot to be such a chore. Shame my ovens lowest temp is 90?C though  :crazy:

When you spawn to the straw like that, I noticed the wbs just sitting on top, did you mix that into the straw layer? Also, after that point do you just place back in the incubator? How long does it usually take to incubate something of that size?

how much really.

After i mix it in, i add a thin layer of unspawned straw to
the top, then bag it, and incubate. Normally another week or
two to colonise, then case, bag, back ikn the incubator again
for 5 days, then fruit

What do you think the best way to break up the PF Tek style jars might be? You mentioned about grating them, which I have seen done in other threads, but to what size do you suggest? Largest?

The other ways that i've broken them up has been to place them in a large zip-lock style baggy and just use my hands through the bag to break them up to malt ball size cubes.

What might be your handiest way?

I would stick to using a zip lock baggie to break them up in.
I've also seen the grater used, but seems a bit unclean to me, if you were to do that, I would use largest holes on the grater.


I've never actually done this, as i moved over to millet quite quickly.

I've never had any problems breaking BRF cakes or millet up with my hands (wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap first) although I moved on to millet after my first grow as it's FAR superior to cakes.

BRF cakes are a waste of time IMO.  :thumbdown:

No problem, I'll keep it going till the last fruit. At the moment, its about 70 % colonised, so no long untill casing time.
