Shroom Gardening-An Adventure in Outdoor Cultivation-Update!

Summer is here in Lala Land. I decided to convert my vegetable garden into a fungi garden. My bed started out as an overgrown mess. I spent 3 hours the other night preparing the soil in the bed. There were old casings and bacterially contaminated casings from the last few months that were mixed into the soil. The soil now is very loose and a mixture of native soil, horse manure compost, and a bit of white millet. I rigged up some shade, as the direct sunlight would not be good for this type of project. I used weed barrier as a shade cloth. I have a soaker hose to keep the soil moist. I will update this thread as I progress. Here are some pics of the bed as it looks now. I will be adding a lattice to the end here and will train vines up the long vertical section. I will do something creative with the rest. I just threw it up tonight. I still have modifications to make to it. I have it rigged so that I can release the shade cloth to maintain the bed. So far so good. Enjoy! Joshua

Hempfest would be cool! I'll have to find out the dates so I can get those days off. You should come down for the Oregon Country Fair, 7/11-13. I plan on getting a camping spot for all three days.
I look forward to talking to you soon.

I just placed an old Pheonix Oyster woodchip block in there, I have some freshly spawned FG and B+, and my old 11x 1/2 pt Brasilian casing.
I spawned a Qt. B+ colonized white millet into a steer manure compost/straw mix. No pasteurization/sterilization of the substrate was done. I laid down a layer of the mix, then the spawn, another layer of the mix, and I cased with non sterilized/paseurized 50/50 +.
I spawned 2 Qt's Florida Gold into horse manure compost in the same manner as above and with the same casing layer.
The old Brazilian casing was placed into a hole as is.
Now for the patience.
I do plan on some more strains/species as well. I will also be planting ground cover such as ivy and herbs.

Looks good! I'm planning to do something similar in my parents' garden with my contaminated and flushes-out cakes. They have a nice patch beneath some oak trees (lots of shade) where nothing else will grow anyway. I figure that with some humidifying in the summer it should work out pretty well. Especially since their neighbour has a horse these days, hence lots of horse manure available! 'Bout one bucket a day, should do for my needs, I suspect

I did not know marigolds were repellants. I'll have to consider those.

Repellent plants. Aromatic herbs are frequently used as pest repellents. The most common insect-repellent herbs are sage, rosemary, mint, and thyme, which are disliked by many pests including the cabbage butterfly. Sage, rosemary or wormwood planted around your carrot plot will mask the scent of the carrots and make it considerably more difficult for the fly to find them. African marigolds, have been found to keep eelworm from the roots of potatoes, cucumbers, and other plants. The roots of the marigold are believed to contain a substance that actually kills the pest. Marigolds will also deter the flea beetle, a pest which loves to make holes in the leaves of both vegetable and flowers, especially wallflowers, stocks or alyssum.
This was taken from::::> http://www.organicmattersmag.com/features/what_do_organic_gardeners_do_about_preventing_pests.htm
I would try the wormwood too...

Keep in mind that fungi have been shown to concentrate certain plant products. If I used something such as wormwood I take the risk of having my fungus incorporate and concentrate the wormwood toxin.
The information is well taken. I will read up on it as soon as I get a chance.

It actually would be quite interesting, a shroom concentrating wormwood alkaloids. What will you end up with, an Absinth-shroom?

Here are some pics from GSAfarmer's garden. He started his garden about 3-4 weeks ago. His results are astounding! He lives about a 2 miles from me, so the climate is very similar to mine.
Brasilian
He thinks this one is B+.

I am reconstructing my outdoor bed. I am building a ten inch raised bed with a hoop house on top.
Here are some recent pics.
This is the pre-construct of the new set-up.
Here are the existing patches with mycelium showing through.
Here are some fruits that made a showing. These were not part of the patches I made. They are from remnants from old expired casings that have been mixed into the garden soil from this past Winter. I have no idea what strain they are. I'm happy to see them appear though!
Enjoy!
