spent B+ cake straw/dung - * COMPLETED *

It seems that most PF Tek cakes produce only one or two strong flushes, with considerably weaker flushes thereafter. Rather than waste time and chamber space with cakes that were essentially done fruiting, dude decided to try a more productive way to use the spent cakes.
October 23
Dude started with two PF cakes (1/4 cup BRF, 1/4 cup H2O and 1/2 cup verm) that had previously given him two nice flushes of B+ per cake.
Using a standard sized bread pan, dude scooped two pan fulls of dry wheat straw into an old pillow case. The straw had previously been cut into lengths of 3" or less. The straw was followed by 6 well-aged horse turds, each approximately the size of a golf ball. The pillow case was then loosely knotted and placed in a pot of hot water to pasteurize at 170F for 50 minutes. After pasteurization was completed, the pillowcase was hung outside to cool and drain. On the following morning the contents of the pillowcase were dumped into a large flat tray. The excess moisture was hand squeezed from the turds and then the turds were mixed thoroughly with the straw.
Dude then grated the two spent B+ cakes into crumbs.
Next, dude put a 1/2" layer of the straw/dung mixture into the bottom of the bread pan. Over that layer he sprinkled a thin layer of the crumbled cake. Dude continued to alternately add layers of cake and straw/dung, stopping every 4 layers to compress the substrate into the pan. To compress the substrate he used a coffee cup. He held the cup by the handle and by laying the cup on its' side dude was able to roll it back and forth in the pan while pressing down firmly. He put the top layer of straw/dung a little bit thicker than the rest so that he could be sure that when the top was colonized the rest was too. After one final compression the pan looked like this:
Dude made sure that he had some space left in the pan for the casing layer and then covered the pan with some thin plastic sheeting. After taping it into place, he used a nail that had been heated over a gas flame to poke holes in the sheeting, approximately 1 hole per square inch....
...and then it was into the incubation chamber with a few other projects.
The incubator is kept between 81F and 88F, with a rather high humidity level thanks to his water pitcher heating system. He will be posting updates as his project grows....
October 31
8 days later dude pulls the bread pan from the incubator, removes the plastic covering and sees that the surface of the dung/straw is about 98% colonized.
The mycelium looks very healthy and more rhizo than his previous experiment with this strain on straw alone. Dude puts the pan back into the incubator uncovered to finish up. He will probably case it this evening, or maybe tomorrow morning. Looking good!
November 1
The straw/dung is now at 100% colonization and has been cased with straight coir.
The coir was rehydrated per the package instructions and an appropriate amount was placed in a glass bowl in the microwave for ten minutes for sterilization. The coir was then sprinkled by hand over the substrate to a depth of about 1/2 inch. Dude then put the casing back into the incubator.
November 3
There were several small patches of mycelium poking up through the casing this morning. Dude patch cased and misted and then put it back into the incubator. He is a little surprised at how fast the coir dries out, even with the high humidity of his incubator.
November 4
The top of the casing is now turning white from mycelium poking through. The areas that are not yet white have mycelia visible just below the surface of the coir.
This is only the second casing dude has done so he is not positive, but he thinks this is the time to initiate pinning. After taking this picture he put the casing into the fruiting chamber.
November 7
There are now pins coming up through the coir but not as many as dude would like to have seen. There are about 12 pins. Several of them are quite large and thick.
He has been misting when the coir looked dry and has been exchanging air 2-4 times daily. Both of dudes' casings have done this - very few pins, though not always just around the edge. Maybe he should try 50/50+ instead of coir the next time around. Any suggestions?
November 9
Here are the first flush fruits of dudes' labors:
After doing some reading dude has determined that the poor pinning was because of improper moisture content of the casing. The center was allowed to become too dry. On the next grow more attention will be given to misting.
The fruit on the table toppled over while being transported to be photographed. It was just over 7" tall. These are by far the best fruits dude has produced thus far. The dung made a very noticable improvement in fruit size over straw alone. On dudes' next grow he is going to increase the dung content to 50% to see what happens.
That's all.

water pitcher, could you give a little more info on that? I'm going to build an incubation chamber of my own some day.
Your grow sounds good best of luck with the casings.

It's a plastic quart pitcher with an aquarium heater mounted to the inside of it. The heater warms the water which in turn radiates the heat to the incubator. It works quite well.

What else are you using for moisture other than the quart pitcher and the aquarium heater? It looks like your running a small humidifier in through the side.... Thanks...

That tub was previously used as a fruiting chamber. In that picture the tub was being used to incubate and the humidifier was not running. My friend was just too lazy to disconnect it.
