*completed*malabars / cased straw: 4oz dry (5 flushes)

hello picfans - witness an unknown cube strain (from unlabelled print) inoculated to wbs and incubated. when fully colonised, 1.5 litres of wbs spawned to 5 litres pasteurised chopped straw (petshop) in layers. holey tinfoil, pressure, left in the dark 10 days until all white. this 5" deep block cased 1.5" with coir/peat/verm/chalk casing and incubated until showing though, then birthed in clear plastic tub with filtered fishtank airpump tubing. 90% rH, 70-75F...... they're growing! ...i count almost 200 pins, of which about 40 are like this: hopefully the rest will sit there nicely and be flush #2, rather than abort (though i've previously experienced straw gives one flush only). that divot is where i scooped out a piece i was worrying about several days back. better safe than sorry! happy harvest is about 3-4 days away!

Wow, how nice! Squirtle is going to be using wild bird seed for his next experiment. He will be casing in a large transparent tupperware container of coco coir and vermiculite. He'd like to know how you set up the air pump for O2/CO2 exchange.
Squirtle's own air pump has two hoses that blow O2 into the container. Should he cut a hole in the side of the container so he can place the hoses in and then seal with tape or something similar? How is your CO2 released?

Hey Oddish...you might want to try and cover the sides of your transparent container with duct tape or some other method to avoid pinning on the sides of the substrate...just a thought...

Is it true that they grow toward whatever light source they can find? Squirtle certainly doesn't want his mushrooms growing sideways. Thanks for the advice.

18 hours later, and these puppies are growing like mad: so much so, in fact, that they were about to hit the lid, and i had to turn the terrarium on it's end and move other tenants about:
.. ..
as you can see, they're splitting for some reason. maybe it's a temp / humidity / air exchange thing ( there's not much else it could be!). opinions? here's >< another thread about splitting / peeling

hey Oddish - all i have is a thin airline piped into a tight hole in the tub wall - the fishtank airpump's intake is filtered. CO2 seeps out of polyfilled holes near the base (only now it's on its side!)
Hamurabi! - good to have you back from your army days. looking forward to following your projects
Update, 8h later - sorry to keep multiposting this, but i never saw them grow so fast in my life! ..
i just know that when i wake tomorrow morning i'm gonna have to do some harvesting before work! anybody care to guess the strain? (i have no idea) ..

I'm going to make sure and use this method rather than fanning. So, your Polyfill holes are on the bottom of your container or on the side near the bottom? Sorry about the mix-up. I tend to get confused often. Also, if I have an unfiltered air pump, what type of measures could I go about to make sure that only clean air is gracing my terrarium? Thanks a bunch!

i fan as well, but with this it doesn't matter if i go out of town, or forget. maybe if i had lots of intakes, fanning would be unnecessary (especially if, like me, you have pets, carpets etc). i'm not aware that you can ever have too much air exchange. the holes should be on the side, near the base. my airpump is a standard design - i took it apart, and covered all possible holes and cracks with filter / micropore - an idea i got from roadkill. i'll try to do a quick update pic before harvest - no doubt sometime in the next 24h roadkill's pootek pictorial growlog (click me)

Update again: these pics are 44hours older than the ones in the top post. It seems they still have some way to go - no veils have popped yet, in fact they're only really now becoming distinguishable as veils. wahey - that means bigger shrooms my best flush yet!
... ...
right - time to go and earn my food and shelter. later, dudes (any guesses on the strain?) ...shirl xx

Well, when i got back from work, i was very satisfied - an extra c.15% bulk, and still going - the biggest is 6" tall -but is that blotch on the caps?
... ...
the first few may be picked tonight (or even in the morning) and then continuously, as they arrive at the finishing post, over the next 24-36h i intend to let a few of the monsters go to maturity, for some prints: mostly for the >free spore ring<, which has supplied most of my spores to date, and perhaps a couple for me. it'd be a shame not to let these mommas breed, and have grandchildren to look at their ancestors' photos one day!
this log is not yet complete! anybody wanna guess the wet/dry weights of the first flush?

an hour later: .... apparently the wet weight was a whopping 882g ! largest fruit was 38g.
i'll finish off this thread in a few days with the dry weight - see if i'm honest: should be about 80 - 85g dry they're def. not romeros. teachers - hmm, perhaps. i've never grown big fruits like this before, so i haven't much to compare with.

Psilocybe cubensis Malabar: Primary macroscopic differences include very thick, fleshy stems with caps that typically remain small in regard to stem length. Spotting usually remains present upon maturity. The cap extends to full plane upon maturity. The most notable characteristic of this species is the attached partial veil. The veil appears cortinate in nature, forming a small web-like pattern that stays tenaciously attached between cap and stem until the mushroom reaches full maturity. Even fully mature specimens may still have this veil attached.
hmmm i think i might be right, what do u guys think?

shirley you mean "resipe" ? right on one count - i use his suggested casing mix (5 verm: 5 peat : 5 coir : 1 CaCo3) - but i think i remember anno uses 10 straw : 1 poop, and there's no poo in this, as it wasn't ready yet. maybe if there was, i'd have achieved the magic number of 1kg fruits. anyone managed this, or have a link to a kiloflush?still, mustn't grumble ! beats my second place flush by a factor of five

This is just another plus for the straw method. I have been a strong advocate of this method for a long time mainly because of the 100+ gram (DRY WEIGHT)flushes experienced with this method on numerous occasions. Swim prefers casing with 50/50 STRAW/Miracle Grow for Vegatables. Great job man!

b-r-f, nein, ich bin ein Englander, aber das ist mir wurst!
thanks for the nods, shroomers (especially roadkill, who taught me loads)
since posting this log, i've had several pm requests for info on the casing tub, so i thought i'd share: after searching all over, the best were to be found, like this one, in a d-i-y shop. thanks to 6T for that tip! This is a 'scuttle' used for mixing paint, mortar or whatever - it measures 10" x 7" x7" (25x18x18cm for you newfangled lot), slightly smaller at the base as you can see: it even has a funky handle!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
i don't use any tubs any more that aren't solid black - even solid white pins round the sides first, and anything you can see a light bulb through, even slightly, will do the same, ime.
36h under the fan wasn't enough - crammed in the desiccant tub for 12h, they're slightly limp, so they're having another 24h fanblast before i pop them back in to crisp up.
one more thing - i learned last night in the chatroom (come one, come all, it's fun - i'm in there most UK late evenings briefly) is that Malabar is an Indian strain, perhaps explaining the large fruits (related to the famously gigantic Orissas?)

dunno what straw type - it didn't say. wheat, hopefully.
here's my final post in this thread: drying complete - 73g (presumed) Malabar harvested. further flushes possible, but unlikely. all aborts, blobs and mutants removed, and misting / fanning continued. new myc is appearing, but no new pins yet.
prints duly made .... ... and harvest stored for future fun ..>>

so the second flush came through, and although less fruits came up, it was still worth the trouble: four big monsters (biggest fruit 41g) and extras bringing the total to 175g. total yield from project: 1057g wet (approx 3oz dry shrooms).
The pic on the left was taken just before i picked the first two - they grew sideways cos i refused to give them headroom this time - and the other pic shows the '4 horses of the apocalypse' at various stages of drying.
>>>>>>>> ..>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<<<<<<<<<<
terrarium space urgently required, so i think i'll have to dispose of the carcass in favour of some amazonians and creepers that have climbed through their casing layer. watch this space, as no doubt i'll want to photograph my new offspring, if they make it!

preschooler: mycobags are for people who don't have / can't yet do / aren't sure about sterilised grain. you have this already, so yes, you're all set without them. people with mycobags can just skip the jar stage, but the rest is the same: spawn (mix) the colonised grain into the pasteurised poo / straw, and let it fully colonise. how much poo/straw? anything from 3x your grain volume to about 20x. the more spawn (grain) you use, the faster it'll colonise. the less you use, the further you can stretch it out. i do somewhere between 5:1 and 10:1, and it colonises in about a week. i do 4-5" deep in 6" tubs. when it's all white, either fruit it straightaway, or even better, add a casing layer (about 1/4 the depth of the poo/straw substrate) and wait until this is full of mycelium (just under the surface) before fruiting. bigger, more even crops. by 'fruiting it' i mean adding the four essential ingredients: correct temps (70-80ish, cold shock not needed for cubies), humidity (less than for cakes, if any at all - casings supply their own), a little light, and lots of fresh air (fanning / air tubing from a pump) to supply oxygen and blow away carbon dioxide. spray regularly to keep the casing layer moist. 'if you build it, they will come.' thanks all for the kind words. i'm ready to try new species now - something i can do indoors. suggestions welcomed.

Sorry to intrude on your thread Shirley, but if this person took 1000 mg of hydrocodone, they would not be alive right now. Considering there is 5mg in a regular strength Vicodin, and 7.5mg in a extra strength, that would be like taking 150-200 pills. I think you need to double check your math and know that when the pill says 5/500 it means 5mg of hydrocodone and 500 mg of acetaminophen With that said, great grow!!! AFOAF is doing some Malabars on straw right now and would love if his fruits would look anywhere as good as yours.

That is an interesting terrarium you have. Doesn't it get wet evrywhere when you pick it up for air xchange? I have built a very similiar setup (much shallower trays) but every time I lifted up the plastic case, water got eveywhere. Not that big of a deal until it accidentally gets on the shrooms.
There was just so much condensation of the walls.

okay, just got back from a fortnight out of town to find this monster - fifth flush singleton: the entire tub was purple-black with spores. time to clean up and move on. don't know how big this fruit is, as it's too much for my scales - certainly well over 100g in the cap alone - my largest single specimen. i suppose the final harvest was about 4 dry ounces. i'll give away the print of the f5 mutha in a contest soon to be announced. this thread is finally *complete* shirl xx
