no pinning
    #634921 - 05/17/02 10:32 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

here is a big problem i have with my jars - 1st it turned out that i have put a little more substrate than i had to and the mycelium wasn't able to colonize the down part of the jars after about 2-3 weeks of colonization. then i put them in the fridge over a night to trigger the pinning, but yet two days after that there is no single pin:(
please tell me what do you think i should do...?

Give it another week. Patience my friend. If you are pinning inside the jar..it can take longer due to the lack of fresh air exchange. Time is the key.

I hope your cakes were fully colonized.

After they are fully colonized they can take up to 2 weeks to see pins.
I usually see pins in 3 or 4 days.

good luck!

i never used to have pinning trouble, never got big flushes or lots of flushes but put this down to not ideal conditions.

But now if i use cakes i get a small first flush then nothing. Been two weeks and not a single pin has shown up, one cake had a small mushroom grow as a second flush but now zero.

Had two casings with two cakes in each. Left covered for a week, mycleia was beginning to grow over casing layer, took lid off, little scratch to top layer, 2 weeks later, nothing. Ohwell, just the way it goes.

Have read cold shocking and dunking is good for pin intiatation, although this hasn't happened for me, my cakes and casings are kept moist due to high humidty in terrarium which i can't control extensively. Apart from that i dunno what could be done to start pinning, as if i did i would be doing it

not much help, sorry, just felt liek moaning

As roadkill alluded to, sometimes people birth their cakes before full colonization without knowing it...remember that there may still be lots of the area inside your cake that isnt finished yet.

well, if i have to be honest, most of the bottoms weren't colonized, but as i said - it is impossible due to the large amount of substrate in the jars - the sidewalls were fully colonized before 1-2 weeks, but there's no space in the bottom.
what u think will happen if i birth them the way they are - with uncolonized bottoms? will the mycelium manage to fully colonize before contams take over the cakes?

thanks a lot for the help everybody!

I doubt it.

You could cut the uncolonized parts of the cake off.

I'd just wait til they are fully colonized.

Are you using Tall 1/2 pint jars ?
If you are....I find that they take longer than the short/wide 1/2 pint jars to colonize.

ive found that if the bottoms of your cake isnt colonized, flip it upside down, and leave it like that, the cake will slide to the bottom, and push the air up to the top (which was the bottom) and i found it makes them speed up quicker. this works great for me, im not sure the success of others for it.
