caterpillars in my jars....WHAAAT!?

seems the last title was too boring to even read...
CdC's microwave grain tek
Since I can't afford filter patch bags and the polypropylene bags I can easily get do not quite stad up to pressure cooking I decided to try and properly sterilise rye grain using just the microwave.
This tek doesn't require the use of plastic bags, any microwaveable container will do.
1. precook the grain of your choice to the correct water content
(I'll leave working out how to achieve this up to you)
2. put the cooked grain into your microwaveable container of your choice, eg
plastic bags with polyfill filters, jars with plastic lids, anything within reason.
3. let sit for 24h
4. microwave on full until the grains are obviously hot hot hot. You just have
to play this by ear. Try not to overcook as grains may burst, and too much
water will be lost due to evaporation. If using jars make sure to leave the
lids on loosely until cooking is finished.
5. shake well.
6. repeat 3 through 5 twice more.
7. the end

I've found grain sterilised this way to be more effectively sterilised than by pressure cooking.
Jars with metal lids can even be used if you're careful. Before microwaving for the first time, wipe the inside of the lid with isopropyl alcohol and leave sitting inside face down on a clean surface. Microwave the jar, sans lid, and while still piping hot smoothly replace the lid, before shaking. On the off chance that an airborne contam should sneak into the boling hot jar it will be unlikely to survive unless you're very unlucky. If doing it this way, make sure the lid has a small hole, preferably covered with a filter disk, tyvek or polyfill, as the cooling jar will suck a pretty hard vacuum and make the lid impossible to remove.
I've tried this tek with both bags and jars with 100% success, and I think it's pretty damn cool.
So there:D
