No, you make a hole, about a quarter inch or smaller in the lid, and plug it with a wad of polyfill, then trim the excess. Innoculate either through the side of the polyfill or in a separate hole...works like a charm, and is very shakeable.

i just did 35 quarts of rye using polyfil plugged lids, every jar worked perfectly, and they're reusable. no opening lids, no glovebox, just slide needle thru polyfil and go. a bag big enough to do hundreds of quarts is a couple bucks at hobby lobby...

Well, if you've got 5000 filter discs lying around, it is definitely more work for the polyfill, but it works all the same and takes about 5 minutes to make more lids than you know what to do with.

I tried that hip, take the brick and put it into a new pie tin, then fill the pie tin with your liquid(im using soy milk). Then when your done just birth it like a cake. Its been about week since I birthed it(it has 3 flushes behind it already, I just wanted to see if I could get any more) and it was damaged at first(I had to leave last minute and it ended up sitting in the fridge for 3 day) but the damage is healed and its starting to form mycial knots all over it.(I put a light layer of damp verm on top too) It was a casing for the first 3 flushes and did nice, I just wanted to experiment, I placed it on some wire above my perlite so it could drain, I was afraid water would collect at the bottom if I tried to recase it. Have you ever tried soy milk for dunking, I had that or 2% milk and Soy had more nutrients and less fat so I thought it might work better.
