Grain without pressure cooker Tec.

I've been using my microwave and vegetable steamer to sterilize millet,Perennial rye grass seed and wood chippings and have noticed that its vital to use the vegetable steamer as well as the microwave. So heres what I've done that worked with millet as the grain spawn with out the use of a pressure cooker.
Put in a tub pour boiling water over till saturated.Leave standing(soaking) of 24 hours at room temp. Then drain off water for 1 hour.
Fill jars and microwave on full for 3mins(800w microwave)
Take out while still hot and place in vegetable steamer for 1 hour
Take straight from steamer and microwave again on full while still hot from the steamer for 3mins.
Cool and inoculate.
If i just use the microwave, say for 10mins on full i still tend to get contams, green mould being the most common in millet and if i boil the millet instead of letting it stand for 24 hours it tends to be too wet and mushy so prone to bacterial contams. So i recommend the use of both microwave and steamer to achieve proper sterilization without a pressure cooker.
Good luck to us none pressure cooker owners

i have been having success with micro+steam tec ever since you posted your microwave birdseed gro-log .thanx man it works well for popcorn, too .
fill a qt. jar 1/3 full with rye berries, add water to 1/8" above the grain . (use a plastic lid, and don't forget the filter .) steam 30 min. shake it, nuke 6 min. steam 90 min. and shake again .
BTW, what have you been feeding that poor bird, jalapenos ? do you use him to flame sterilize your tools ?

What about combination nuke and boiling instead of steaming?

maybe we should put our heads together to refine this tec. for the faqs. here's what i found works best for me . soaking grain 24 hr. nuke 5 min. stir, repeat . drain well , and load into jars . steam 90 min. i use a big stock pot, (holds 7 qt. jars) with a home made grate in the bottom, and 2" of water . preheat the oven to 350F, bring water to boil on stove top, and bake 90 min .

Thanx for the info guys. I've been bemoaning the lack of a pc for awhile now. This method, I will have to try.

the first time i tried grain i boiled it and ended up with bacterial contam, after PC'ing. so it seems that boiling grain first is not a good idea...now i just soak for 24 hours(cold water then PC).

I don't have a vegitable steamer.. All I have is a really big roasting pan that I used to steam sterylize my jars (boiling)
It would be really neat if there were a way to just be able to successfully sterylize all the evil bacteria out of a substrate by just plain microwaving. Microwaves work alot faster, and it would make the substrate preperation proceedures in tech's a hell of alot shorter. Maybe just get a really big ziplock bag, fill it with like 12 250ml jars worth of your selected substrate, nuke the hell out of it then just inoculate that or perform a mycelium transplant on it. Then case all that beautiful looking colony, and await your 'pop-corn"
RE: Oven sterylization (this would be used for a bulk substrate, which is what I want:) ) Would cooking substrate in the oven kill nutrients that the mycelium will need?
Sorry my posts are so big. I'm very intrigued with this particular aspect of mycology.
Thanks for all your input too I Apreciate it. Let's hear some more Idea's or Facts about sterylization. I'll do some research myself and see what I come up with

Pastuerizing bulk substrate with the oven is common practice.

Can you give us more info on how your jars were prepared? Thanks. Also what's so special about vegetable steamer? To be honest with you I'm not too sure what a vegetable steamer is

resurrecting an old post for further discussion...
(this is a prime example of the helpful search feature)
the lids on my jars are metal. they dont do well in the microwave. i have microwavable plastic dishes, can i boil them? would it work if i let the lids sit in a peroxide solution while i nuked the unlidded jars and lidded them to boil to prevent the steam from adding to the moisture content, and take the lids back off to renuke? obviously putting the lids back into a sterile environment while the last nuking is occurring.
6C, a vegetable steamer is the same as a rice cooker.
have there been any improvements on the tek?

it's really very simple. soak the grain 24 so endo-spores germinate. rinse well. then use a Pyrex bowl with a lid to nuke it 5 min. give a stir, and nuke it another 5. rinse again, and nuke again if you like. then drain to field capacity, and load grain into jars. put jars in a steamer and cook for 90 min.
i still use this method for doing large amounts of grain cuz my dinkie little pc won't hold qt. jars.

Check E-Bay. I just bought an 18 quart Presto in the box for $9.25 + $10.26 shipping. Spent $88 for the same one at the store 3 months ago. There are like 300 PC's for sale on E-Bay right now. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick
