Handbook To Higher Consciousness!
    #2627306 - 05/02/04 07:23 AM (19 years, 10 months ago)

I'd like to make a post about this book, by Kenneth Keyes Jr, The Handbook To Higher Consciousness. It is by far the best and most useful book I have ever read, and I know there are some people around here that have read it as well, and many who would totally get and understand it...

It draws from a lot of Buddhist ideas, and presents them in an easy to comprehend and utilize manner. It shows you how there are different levels of consciousness, and how our mind is full of addictions, that when not fufilled, create a negative experience of life in the here and now moment.

At the moment, I can't go into too much detail, but later I will come back and really add a lot of what I think about this book, and what it has done for me. Small portions of the book are allowed to be reproduced, so I have decided I will include in this post the Twelve Pathways To Higher Consciousness, and the descriptions of the Seven Centers Of Consciousness.

I would like to add that I feel that if any real progress is going to be made along a spiritual path of higher consciousness, it has to be done consciously and real effort has to be put into making our mind our own. Transcending these addictions and turning them into preferences that aren't backed with emotional repercussions if not fufilled takes some active, conscious work... life life here and now!

?
T H E  T W E L V E  P A T H W A Y S
                      To the Higher Consciousness Planes
                      of Unconditional Love and Oneness

        FREEING MYSELF

        1. I am freeing myself from security, sensation, and power
addictions that make me try to forcefully control situations
in my life, and thus destroy my serenity and keep me from
            loving myself and others.

        2. I am discovering how my consciousness-dominating
addictions create my illusory version of the changing world
of people and situations around me.

        3. I welcome the opportunity (even if painful) that my
minute-to-minute experience offers me to become aware of the
addictions I must reprogram to be liberated from my robot-like
            emotional patterns.

        BEING HERE NOW

        4. l always remember that I have everything I need to enioy my
here and now -- unless I am letting my consciousness be
dominated by demands and expectations based on the dead past
            or the imagined future.

        5. I take full responsibility here and now for everything I
experience, for it is my own programming that creates my
actions and also influences the reactions of people around
            me.

        6. I accept myself completely here and now and consciously
experience everything I feel, think, say, and do (including
my emotion-backed addictions) as a necessary part of my
            growth into higher consciousness.

        INTERACTING WITH OTHERS

        7. I open myself genuinely to all people by being willing to
fully communicate my deepest feelings, since hiding in any
degree keeps me stuck in my illusion of separateness from
            other people.

        8. I feel with loving compassion the problems of others without
getting caught up emotionally in their predicaments that
are offering them messages they need ior their growth.

        9. I act freely when I am tuned in, centered, and loving, but
if possible I avoid acting when I am emotionally upset and
depriving myself of the wisdom that flows from love and
            expanded consciousness.

        DISCOVERING MY CONSCIOUS-AWARENESS

        10. I am continually calming the restless scanning of my
rational mind in order to perceive the finer energies that
enable me to unitively merge with everything around me.

        11. I am constantly aware of which of the Seven Centers of
Consciousness I am using, and I feel my energy,
perceptiveness, love and inner peace growing as I open all
            of the Centers of Consciousness.

        12. I am perceiving everyone, including myself, as an awakening
being who is here to claim his or her birthright to the
higher consciousness planes of unconditional love and oneness.
?

?
THE SEVEN CENTERS OF CONSCIOUSNESS

        1. THE SECURITY CENTER.
This Center makes you preoccupied with food, shelter, or
whatever you equate with your personal security.  This
programming forces your consciousness to be dominated by your
continuous battle to get "enough" from the world in order to
        feel secure.

        2. THE SENSATION CENTER.
This Center is concerned with finding happiness in life by
providing yourself with more and better pleasurable sensations
and activities.  For many people, sex is the most appealing of
all sensations.  Other addictive sensations may include the
sound of music, the taste of food, etc.

        3. THE POWER CENTER.
When your consciousness is focused on this Center, you are
concerned with dominating people and situations and increasing
your prestige, wealth, and pride -- in addition to thousands of
more subtle forms of hierarchy, manipulation, and control.

        4. THE LOVE CENTER.
At this Center you are transcending subject-object relationships
and are learning to see the world with the feelings and
harmonies of flowing acceptance.  You see yourself in everyone
-- and everyone in yourself.  You feel compassion for the
suffering of those caught in the dramas of security, sensation,
and power.  You are beginning to love and accept everyone
        unconditionally -- even yourself.

        5. THE CORNUCOPIA CENTER.
When your consciousness is illuminated by this Center, you
experience the friendliness of the world you are creating.  You
begin to realize that you've always lived in a perfect world.
To the degree that you still have addictions, the perfection
lies in giving you the experience you need to get free of your
emotion-backed demands.  As you reprogram your addictions, the
perfection will be experienced as a continuous enjoyment of the
here and now in your life.  As you become more loving and
accepting, the world becomes a "horn of plenty" that gives you
more than you need to be happy.

        6. THE CONSClOUS-AWARENESS CENTER.
It is liberating to have a Center from which your
Conscious-awareness watches your body and mind perform on the
lower five centers.  This is a meta-center from which you
non-judgmentally witness the drama of your body and mind.  From
this Center of Centers, you learn to impartially observe your
social roles and life games from a place that is free from fear
        and vulnerability.

        7. THE COSMIC CONSCIOUSNESS CENTER.
When you live fully in the Sixth Center of Consciousness, you
are ready to transcend self-awareness and become pure awareness.
At this ultimate level, you are one with everything -- you are
love, peace, energy, beauty, wisdom, clarity, effectiveness, and
        oneness.
?

Very intriguing stuff, I think! The book goes very deep and really supports all of this. I've got to go, but I also recommend finding the book on Amazon.com, where they let you read a few of the pages of the book as well.  Click Here Underneath the picture of the cover is the link to read those pages....

Yet another man who can so beautifully bring out the essence of it all. He does a magnificent job of describing the programming which has been instilled in us throughout our lives, it's habits, and transcending it. The only thing I might add is to find the root of our programming which this man so thoroughly explains. The constant chattering in our mind, or the internal dialogue. You will find that this literally is the programming that has been instilled in us throughout our lives and once you make this realization and begin to learn to identify it and live outside of it you'll see just how mechanical and literally programming/programmed our society is.

This reminds me of something I wrote once...

"I am a machine programmed by my society. Everything that I am is based on my past experiences. I have learned how to react to certain actions. I am asleep trying to correct the past and dreaming of the future while ignoring the infinite that's in the present right in front of me. It is not the fault of my fellow man however because they themselves have been forced out of their own state of sleep to program me. If I, for only a second manage to wake up and yet choose to go along with my mechanics and watch others sleep while truly thinking they are awake then it would indeed be my fault. So now that I am awake I must struggle for the rest of my life to remain awake and not fall into the trap of falling back asleep and believing that I am awake. I must treasure the infinite that is in the present because tomorrow I may die and I will no longer be able to. This is a sleep literally made of ego, I must lose ego to never let the sleep take me again."

This sleep as I refer to it is the product of living strictly within the internal dialogue.

I'm definitely going to check this guy's book out. Thanks for posting this!

You are definitely right about the internal dialogue doing the programming. That is exactly what it is that is creating the way we perceive the world, and is making us feel the way we do. Which is exactly why he has laid out the Twelve Pathways as he did: statements to tell yourself in your mind, that internal dialouge, in order to change the way you are experiencing life from the perspective you have.

It is really why meditation is so important, people start to observe this internal dialouge without judgement... coming to realize how the thoughts direct your awareness, how they create what you feel.... the first step is coming to understand your mind and how it works.

Our thoughts are very powerful! We really do need to watch what we say. The more meaning and purpose and focus we give them, the more effective they are... some of these addictions we are carrying around are hard to break. One might introduce the contradictory thought to bust it, say "I feel comfortable in situations where I am around a lot of people", and there might be hundreds of thoughts that will jump right in there and try to knock that thought the fuck out... that is the old programming, and once we come to understand how this old programming is robbing us of our oppurtunity to be free, loving beings in every moment, we will also understand why it is so important to break these old patterns of thinking.

The only way to break clear of our negative, short circuited programming is to change it. In that case, keep repeating "I feel comfortable in situations where I am around a lot of people", no matter how many thoughts try to convince you that you do not, no matter how much it doesn't feel like you do, keep pushing the new thought... We know that there really isn't any reason to feel uncomfortable around lots of people, and if there actually was a reason to be concerned, experiencing through a negative, uncomfortable state of mind only limits our ability to act in the best possible way in that situation. Feeling uncomfortable is only cutting us off from the moment and the experience around and within us.

Our thoughts we have today create our state of mind tomorrow. The more we identify what in our mind is seperating us from the full, rich experience of the moment, the more progress we have made to freeing our mind of those addictions and opening up the true experience within us... How we feel and what we think is a conscious choice in each moment that we make. No matter how unconscious we unknowingly make that choice.... it is still a conscious choice that we should have full power in choosing.

The book sounds very interesting. I once went to a Psycologist ( He called himself a caregiver---and his teachings changed my life) after a bad car accident when i was in horrible shape mentally. One of his main teachings I can remember is staying in the Hear and Now. Don't worry about the past and what is in the future.

Lux, I enjoy that paragraph you wrote. It makes perfect sense to me that we can all be asleep due to our ego.

One thing I thought was really cool was the explanation of the Cosmic Consciousness Center. The description of this center of consciousness
gives me goosebumps as I write this because it describes the state of mind i was in one time when I took 3 sunshine blotters (after not having tripped for about 4 years). The experience I had has stuck with me and everytime I read about something that reminds me of the experience I have the urge to write about it or do something that helps me remember it.

Anyway, great post Fireworks and thanks for bringing this book to my attention.

Haha, you really do get it! As the aborigines put it, the internal dialogue 'sings the world into being'. My methodology is more that of experiencing the result and then reflecting on it to find the way to that result. I prefer to simply be aware of myself every moment, and with this comes the awareness of the internal dialogue which I observe from outside of it. I absolutely agree with everything you've said though. Our paths may be slightly different but they lead to the same place.

I notice the more you stay in the hear and the now the less susceptible you are to feeling shitty, and the easier problems become to deal with.

I've also read somewhere that referred to this internal dialogue as "monkey talk", and that this made up most of the thoughts of either primates or ancient man ( I think I read this somewhere on the shroomery). Its all so interesting...

The way I make reference to the internal dialogue is the chattering which we think is ourselves but we fail to realize is only one part of ourselves, and it isn't even really ourselves but a mechanical way of perceiving and dealing with the world which has been instilled in us.

This reminds me of the way I use psychadelics. I use them to get access to the state of mind that is a little while down the path I am on right now, to get a glimpse of what it is like, and to experience it so I know where I am heading... then I start to put together how to get there, and progress faster since I know exactly where it is where I am going.

Using psychadelics is really the start of a new state of mind... but I would only recommend using them as the catalyst for the start of the new mindframe... putting the rest of it together is your own responsibility.

Trying to think of any more thoughts to add on the main subject... can't think of anything at the moment. I'll be back later!

Yea-a-h man! I bought Keye's book when it came out in the mid 1970's and also found it useful and helpful. I still have it, and aside from another workable translation of chakra psychology (I never quite agreed with the description of the Throat Center 5th center), I remember the line which reads something like, 'You create as much suffering when you take offense as when you give offense.' That was an eye-opening, enlightening and life-changing statement for me. Ken Keyes passed away a few years ago.

I really wish I had the book with me right now, I left it with a friend when I came to Norway, back in August. But I'll be getting it back when I come back in just a few days.. I can't wait to read it again and really work on my mind consciously with the help it provides.. I've just been stumbling in the dark on my own sorta.

It is really jam-packed with insight and a great perspective on things.... why don't they teach people how to use their minds effectively in school? Ohh.... right.

sweet *crack knuckles*

I have been using this book for almost a year now, and it works wonders.  the key about all of this is using the rational mind and the ego to work together in a way to better yourself and free your mind of the control you let the ego have.

when you learn to memorize and use the 12 pathways, you will see that they will provide you with a complete solution to every emotional problem that you make yourself experience in life. But in order to get the most out of pathways, we need to intuitively use them on the deepest levels of awareness, have them memorized, this means saying them before you get up, and before you go to bed.  when you do this, you are using your ego and rational mind right away.. the key here is for when something happens in the world, you don't instantly respond with negative feelings.  it's an understand, not only intellectually, but physically as well. so when something out of the blue comes up, your peace won't be disturbed, even for a moment! this is all to keep you loving, centered, conscious, and aware!  the pathways will help you reprogram your own mind, and claim your right to peaceful and loving existence.

along with the pathways, we have the centers on consciousness that keye's has outlined.  It's wonderful when you discover that working on your own consciousness is the most fullfilling thing that you can do in life.  no matter what you do, you can always add to the beauty of your outside drama if you are constantly aware of which center of consciousness you are using.    Everything you do has aspects on the centers keyes has laid out.  We can enjoy life on ALL levels, and not jsut hung up on the first three; the power, security, and sensation centers.  The great thing is that the more time you spend in the loving center, the cornicopia center, or even the conscious-awareness center, you WILL interact with more and more people.  you will also have tons more energy as I have seen I don't need as much sleep, and I don't get tired as often.  This is a way to enhance and enrich your lives for as long as you live. i used to stay inside all the time wondering what I should do, instead of flowing with what is happening now.

combining the awareness of what center of consciousness you are using, with the twelve pathways to continually guide you is meditation.  And you do this all the time in our busy lives so the our entire life will become meditation.  In this way meditation is the method for consistently seeing what's around you more clearly and way more consciously.

the great thing about the book is that it is a guide so you can nadle your addictions.  addictions in his book are defined as any desire that which isn't met, will cause a negative and seperating emotion.  the idea is to uplelve a desire from an addiction to a preference firstly!  it's about catching youself when in the moemnt you feel a seperating emotion.  this is about making much more effective choices, and it really does enhance the way we will see life.

I don't know if anyone saw it or not, but I made a proposal to set up a "class" to where we can help each other with our internal struggles.  I think what fireworks has laid out for us is a good start, so we can get an idea of what might be going on.  we can use these ideas which are VERY effective to help better each other!  here

this is a ownderful opportunity to help better each other and thank you fireworks for writing about this book.  it really is a treasure.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

I just figured I would stop in quick and reflect some more...

An important aspect that is presented in this book involves exploring the way we act and think. Say, for an example I just freshly experienced today: After supper, I had a good handful of dishes to deal with, and a fresh, clean load to put away. Really, all I wanted to do was come up here and put on some Infected Mushroom, and get caught up in S and P.

Now, first off, I know that I had to do my duty; it is what I am paid to do, and I can't just leave the pans and other dishes that needed to be washed by hand sitting there, and the counters uncleaned. I've been making a lot of progress, as far as keeping in the moment and enjoying what I am doing, but tonight it seems I had to make it difficult for myself.

So I was pissed I had to do them, and I mean, bloody hell, they are just dishes, it was only going to take 15 minutes to do them, really... but yet I'm feeling the negative emotions burning within. It is interesting to note how quick the world sucks when you start to let it suck, and how easy it is to start being negative about other things as well....

But I've made enough progress with my mind and everything so that I kept telling myself these things, how it is inevitable and I don't have to be pissed off about it, how it is a choice I am making, how I am controlling my suffering... I let myself struggle some more, even though it sucked to do so and I had no real point... my ego could justify it, it seems......  :frown:

Apparently I was addicted to demanding more out of the moment than what I was stuck with. Exploring my thoughts, the way I acted, my thoughts.. that is the first step to fixing that. As it is quite the pretty trivial example, and considering how I've gotten a lot better with dealing with these addictions and everything, turning them to non-emotion backed preferences, I was able to get over it and relax and just be in the moment, before I was even done with the dishes....

Making progress relies on being completely honest with yourself, for one thing. You have to accept yourself and who you are before you can change for the better. For another example, I have had bad posture for awhile, but have been consciously working on it. It has been getting a lot better, but I can remember at times I would emotionally explode, dealing with thoughts like "it's never getting any better", "I look so fucking bad", etc. etc. etc... any related, negative thought you can think of.

Well, change takes awhile. In that moment, all I could do is my stretches, my holding myself up as well as I could at that time... beyond that, there is nothing I could do in that moment towards meeting the demand I was making. And since it was an addiction, I suffered, experienced the negative emotions, and, of course, experiencing said negative emotions did absolutely nothing to help towards my posture... completely pointless!  :smirk:

Another one of the main points in the book is that if you desire to change something, and there is an action in the moment you can make towards that change, then do it! If there isn't anything you can do within reason to bring about that change, then don't concern yourself with it until the time comes that you can. The future is tomorrow, and one should do what needs to be done for the future, but if there isn't anything to do regarding it, forget about it!!!

It really is about opening up yourself to this fufilling, totally awesome, mind blowing experience known as life. The experience within! Like Kaiowas said: "it's wonderful when you discover that working on your own consciousness is the most fullfilling thing that you can do in life." I mean, almost everyone here knows that feeling on mushrooms, when everything is just "wow! life!!!!!!" Total experience! :mushroom2:

:headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
Peace. :mushroom2:

This post alone has made me see things 10 times clearer! Definitly going out and getting this book. Untill then...
"I am freeing myself from security, sensation, and power
addictions that make me try to forcefully control situations
in my life, and thus destroy my serenity and keep me from
loving myself and others."

It depends on what you're in school for. Plus, there is a price to pay - the price of time. I changed from pre-med to philosophy after my 3rd semester as an undergraduate and took all kinds of wonderful courses in mysticism, mysticism of Plato, Yoga 1 & 2, Logic, parapsychology (with Bob Brier, Egyptologist and co-publisher with J.B. Rhine), psycho-history seminar in witchcraft, philosophy & surrealism, etc. Those courses helped to make me the 'fun guy' that I am today, but when I graduated, I went back to Mom & Dad - educated, mystical, psychedelic, holy, as well as untrained, unprepared for real life and unemployed. It took six more years of school over seven years to realize that today's 'practical' philosophers are called 'counselors.'

Wow, Markos... to leave such a ambitious and potentially "financially successful" major to pursue what you truly believe[d] in at the time, and essentially sacrificing your secure integration into society is extremely praiseworthy. I only wish I had the courage to just run with it like you did.

Now that I think about it, my 3rd semester is my next semester!

I had taken too much acid and was following the path of Icarus, who flew too close to the Sun. When I 'came down,' it was hard, and I had a 'breakdown.' I then sought refuge in yet more school (after driving a truck for half a year), and entered a Methodist seminary for two years. Then again, back into the lower world, this time moving my Dad's business of 35 years, lock-stock-and-barrel. It was another year before I entered a four year Ph.D. program and lived below the poverty level. It took yet another 3 years to get decent-paying employment that was relevant to my education. I turn 110 years old next month

I wonder if i will be in the same position as you one day. AS of now its okay with my mom helping me out and all, plus the fact that i dont have studios that take all my time away from working. I work on the weekdays to try and pay for the lower end of things. In a couple of years ill be on my own, with school, work, and a living situation to deal with. The state has raised tuition levels while it hasnt changed the requirements for fafsa... or aid. ewll... not for me anyway.

I would hope that after the next 5 years is over, that i have overcome a lot. I have already tasted the touch of financial burden early in life, and now it only seems as if its a part of how life is. Ill take out loans if i have to.

My journey now is one of self control, balance, and trying to maximize my time. Althought what had hit me a few years ago was nothing to be considered brought about by drug use, i then entered a realm of lots of heavy distorted perceptions about life. Given my previous history before then... id say im turning about 30- maybe 38.. I feel like i have aged beyond my body. With a situation like yours... may i say... happy 111 to you!
