The Ability to Zoom

Let's say you take a picture with an ordinary digital camera, with an ordinary lens. Let's say you take a picture of one of these lovely Norwegian mountains outside my window.
Now, once the picture has been transferred to your computer, with the right software, you can do some quality zooming. On the mountain on the horizon, you could zoom in to a single tree and see it in all of its detail.
The people I am staying with have a device that will take camera film and make it into an image on the computer. The thing is, you can zoom in anywhere and have a perfect image.
The cameras taking these pictures are normal cameras, with normal lenses. Some sort of computing program is allowing you to take the image and zoom in wherever.
This makes me wonder. Why the hell don't we have this abillity? Our eyes catch an image. We see it as it is out there. Why can't we look at something and decide to zoom in on a far away object, and then see it in all of its detail?
Our minds are powerful. It could handle such a program. The only thing I want to know is how the hell I can do this. There is no physical limitation. This isn't like flying. All our mind needs is a normal image.
So, what do you think? Can we make a program in our head to be able to zoom in on shit that we say? I think it is possible, but making it possible eludes me... Peace.

I guess it's the same as how we can't concentrate singularly on one thing and eliminate distraction completely. Or to numb our own pain. We just don't have the ability to turn off our senses and concentrate on others, or to turn off a sense partly.

But we do have the abilities to do these things. It is possible to focuse on only one thing and it is possible to turn off acknowledgment of the input from our senses.
Granted, it takes a lot of work to be able to get these abilities, but it is possible. Peace.

Sure we do. Close your eyes and listen for a while. Notice how much more you hear?

Well, I imagine that there are some higher end softwares that do just that. Like professional setups and such.
But even if you take your normal zoom feature in the standard image programs, that is more than we can do ourselves.
By the way, that thing where you can scan the negatives of pictures is truly amazing. He had a picture of the skyline of Chicago and you could zoom in anywhere and keep hitting zoom, and it was still finely detailed. Peace. Peace.

Actually there are physical limtations, such as the focal length of your eyes and the number of receptors in your retinas

It's not so much the "software" our eyes/brain are equipped with, as the HARDWARE that we're equipped with. Our actual eyes.

I would like to think that we should at least be capable of a 1x or a 2x zoom. Most definitely. The software is the issue. It isn't the lens on the camera that zooms in (unless, of course, you have a camera with a zooming lens. heh), but it is the program that does the zooming and such.
mm.... zoom... Peace.

There's a hardware upgrade that can allow you to do just that. It's called "binoculars."

Actually you have the software, it's called imagination. The computer software does the same thing, it "guesses" which pixels will expand and which palette will be used. Both methods have their pros and cons, computers are more accurate, we are more flexible.

Hey Fireworks - take a digital camera, try using the focal zoom, then try using the digital zoom - the focal zoom is way better on the camera itself - like MAIA said - it scans over the picture and fills in the blanks, outputting a new picture - our eyes only see the one picture, so for it to re-output a new image, you would have to completely shut out your optical input, AND have a photographic memory.

Nubious, I think you got it there. I was trying to figure out what exactly was the problem that forbids us from being able to do something like this, and it's that. A camera zooms by changing its lense configuration. A digital image can be zoomed by saving the image to a computer's memory, and then working from there. We don't have a comparable memory, and of course we can't use our eyeballs to do the trick.

we dont have that ability, simply because...we dont???? why dont we have wings? becauase we dont! we didnt evolve that way, and biological structures, generally, arent as sophisticated as mechanical ones.

Yeah, you're right. Trees and humans aren't as NEAR as sophisticated as robots and computers we have created. MY MISTAKE. I mean, it isn't like we created them ourselves or anything.
And to think that who and what we are right at this moment is the end result of evolution, you're wrong. Things continously evolve. People learn new skills. Shit CHANGES. Peace.
