what id like to know, and what i think what toadstool was meant was:

how do you realize you're dreaming and as a result have a lucid dream? is it just something that happens? or is it a result of increased awareness of oneself? is there anything that can increase the possibility of lucid dreams?

as far as i can remember ive only really had one lucid dream, and it was only semi-lucid. throughout it i would occassionally remember that it was only a dream, but generally i wasnt aware. at one point in this dream i found i had the ability to fly, halfway through i realized i was within a dream and continued to fly over what in the dream i knew as my high school, but when i really thought about it it was a completely different place.

after seeing waking life ive been very interested in having lucid dreams, however until recently ive been distracted by other things and havent been able to read much about it. does anyone have anything i can read on the topic? or does anyone have explanation/description of lucid dreaming and how to achieve such a state?

"is there anything that can increase the possibility of lucid dreams?"

keep a dream journal. And if you've seen waking life, you should know that looking at a digital clock, reading fine text, or changing the light in a room can trigger lucidity. That stuff actually works.

yeah, my trouble is that i dont think of these things while dreaming. a dream journal would be kinda cool actually, people have mentioned it before, but now it strikes me as something id really like to read later on. shrug, thanks for the help

I ve had quite a few lucid dreams so far and i remember the first one real well, it was the most vivid one of them all. there are several levels of lucidity and when you achieve a high one it is really something amazing. I think lucid dreaming should be further researched and studied to the point that it could be used in our culture and society as tool to further understand ourselves and the nature of our universe. In a limitless plane of existance imagine all the infinate possibilities. the only limitation would be your imagination.

Well lucid dreams can be the most amazing experiences in my life and at the same time they can be somewhat of a burden. I don't know if any one else has experienced this but every night I have intense, vivid dreams, I wake so tired as though I have actually been awake acting these events out in real life. I guess that's why I have befriended the opiates throughout my life, they truly open up scenary in my mind that no other substance can even begin to display. On acid I've had some extremely wild, vivid dreams too but that's only after the comedown and I'm well worn out. On opiates I'm still quite euphoric when I enter into dreamland so they have become a more effective tool for reaching those great distances inside one's mind. The outer limits of our mind are never truly limited at all but can be very scary if you do not tread lightly. I've had some extremely terrifying dreams that I might have encouraged somehow. Overall, my most enjoyable times have come from dream sleep.  How odd? Why have we been given this tool with no complete understanding of it's main purpose? I deeply believe that there is a very important purpose for these slumber thoughts. Amazing as they are, will we ever grasp their true meanings?

The golden question. For me, any time I've actually thought while in a dream to ask, "Is this a dream?" the answer was obvious. So there was no need for me to do any sort of check, like looking at printed text or flipping a light switch. That's the whole trick, thinking to ask.

I did have my highest concentration of lucid dream moments when I was most interested in the idea. One thing I liked from the movie "Waking Life" was the idea to get a habit during waking hours to ask, "Is this a dream?" Again, the answer will be pretty clear (unless you really want to push it) but maybe doing this enough will make you ask it in a dream. And there you go.

Personally I'm not interested in having a whole bunch of lucid dreams. Mostly I prefer to be a spectator and think about them the next day. But when I have shitty moments, it'd be nice to be able to say, "Buh-Bye" That happened once, and it was awesome.

I think you should do that, just ask. Its funny because in a lot of my dreams im like halfway into the dream when all of a sudden something just a little bit out of the ordinary happens and then i go "Oh, im dreaming again, duh, ok" And the dream gets intresting and quite pornographic at times. Anyway. I think you should ask yourself every morning "am i still dreamin'?" I dont know if its just me but the stuff that happens during the morning is the ones that have the most influence in my dreams. You know like just the total opposide of the stuff im thinking about when i go to bed. So im going to try asking myself that in the morning and probably it will come up in a dream more often and like hongomon said once you are actually in the dream the answer is clear.
