EF-tek (Exotics Fanaticus cakes) * 60
    #28011928 - 10/23/22 04:10 AM (1 year, 3 months ago)

Exotics Fanaticus cakes:

Here is a little writeup to describe a way to cultivate a large range of species especially exotics as Panaeolus and rare Psilocybes but it works also for classic Ps cubensis.
It’s not a high yield tek but it showed good results for me and I think it can be useful to study lot of species/genetics without spending too much time and not using too much space, it can be interesting for producing some fresh prints or find nice specimen to clone for more productive projects.

It works a bit like a PF-tek but it’s adapted for Exotics, as main difference there is a casing integrated around a nutritive core, there’s a bit of preparation but then you can skip lot of steps (less steps so less fail risk afterwards the colonization & more time for other projects or your family)

Ingredients:
A well hydrated casing mix, i use a 50/50 verm/peat moss + calcium (I often use crushed seashells sold for chicks but hydrated lime is nice too)
A nutritive mix, I use mostly shredded hemp sold as gardening mulch or pet litter and millet (50/50 approximately by weight), other alternative recipes works too, as chopped straw+birdseeds even adding coir or horse poo (I loved Hpoo but my wife don’t like when I cook poop in the kitchen so now I usually do it without)

Ratio for making 24 jars/cakes:
-12 jars of verm, 12 of peat moss, 6 water and 1 of crushed oyster shells.
-6 jars of shredded hemp, 3 of millet & 3 (hot) water

Equipments:
Classic wide-mouth jars from which you can remove the whole cake. Simple lids with a polyfil filter in the center for air exchanges and doing inoculation through it.

Preparation: i usually prepare both mixes a day before doing the cakes to have a proper hydration (field capacity).
Fill the cakes starting with the casing by pressing it with your fingers to have it everywhere on the bottom and side

Add the nutritive core with a spoon

Cover it with a layer of casing (you can add a bit of dry verm on top but not necessary so now I do without)

Close your cakes with the lids, cover it with a piece of foil and ready for sterilization! (90min, 12 jars in my PC)

When jars are sterilized let it cool for a night and then just need to inoculate with 1 or 2cc from LC syringes or even with some promising MSS if you feel ok for a bit of gamble: as an excited premature inoculator : ) for a new genetic I often do one jar with a MSS and do agar if this test jar fail... Don’t blame me too much for it & not saying it’s good to buy MS syringes, always start from prints if you can, to make your own dilution and please don’t inoc big grain bags with untested MSS.

After inoc just let them colonize for few weeks usually between 2weeks to 2month max depending species & temperature (between 20 Celsius to 27 is usually fine).
When it seems fully colonized just remove the whole cake from the jar, dunk for a night in water to hydrate it well then it’s ready for fruiting conditions (in a JCM style FC, Martha or your own system). You can put the cakes on unmodified lids.

Cut view of a colonized EF cake:

Some pics of results as exemples:

Pan cyan Central Florida

Pan Jambo

Pan cyan BVI

Pan cyan Estero

Pan cy Alabama

Pan mystery South Africa

Ps hispanica

semperviva

tampanensis Beulah

papuana

mexIcana R.A

caerulescens

pseudoaztecorum

alutacea

Gym luteofolius

It also works with Ps cubensis:

Rusty Whyte

P-E

subcubensis Argentina

Golden Mammoth

LGT

Smurf

Enigma

Those cakes can be also used to start woodlovers mycelium, after colonization just need to expand it to woodchips, preferably to small patches or pots and wait to select the good fruiters for expanding them to bigger beds & clone some beautiful specimen on agar or via stem butts to woodchips to have nice fruiters genetics for better results every years

subaeruginosa

Ps cyan

Ps ovoid

Sometimes mostly during dry summers or if your FC is too dry for this tek you can just open the jars and directly fruit from the top like this:

Ps natalensis

Galindoi

Gym luteofolius

cube Transkei

Those little EF cakes as PF can be also mixed to bulk substrate then cased for bigger yields:

Pan cyan Estero
(better use plastic or Pyrex trays than aluminum)

Blue Spring

Pro & cons of this tek:

Pro: Really few steps before fruiting, no need to go to bulk, no need an other casing, lot of genetics can be observed at same time, good visibility, don’t need a lot or expensive materials, it works with a lot of species, there is a bit of preparation but it’s really time saving afterwards, not a lot of space needed, as a cake form there is good fruiting surface & no risk of problematic side pins, can be used with LC & or a good MSS, no need fancy lids, recipe can be adapted if you don’t find everything (chopped straw instead of shredded hemp, other grain, birdseeds or brf instead of millet, cacti soil instead of 50/50 casing...) It can be a good starting point to find interesting specimen to clone, making easily fresh prints, if it fail or passed cakes are a good amendment for your garden or plant in pots (sometimes it can fruit again in nature hands).

Pan bisporus almost naturalized in my garden greenhouse since few years now, just from old cakes dumped here as fertilizer

Cons: not very productive, those little cakes tend to dry too fast (dunk one night, before fruiting, spray it sometimes or for sensitive mush as Pan: syringe watering can be a solution), preparation is a bit longer than classic PF, need at least 3-4 different ingredients, first times when doing it can be a bit fastidious to prepare the casing inside the jars with enough space for the nutritive core: i used a tube at first to fill both mixes but finally it’s faster and more practical by pressing casing with 2-3 fingers then filling hemp/millet core with a spoon.

Thanks for reading this Exotics Fanaticus cakes Tek. I hope this can be useful for some people mostly to feel confident to try other species like Panaeolus and rare Psilocybes instead of sticking only to cubensis.

Fantastic writeup. I've wondered what the tek was behind those cakes. Thanks for sharing, I'm definitely going to give this a try.

VL.. Nice work! I have always wondered what type of tek you used.  Super nice write up with amazing results.  It may not be as productive, but I'm sure its a bit more dependable. Killer!
