Hello fellow growers!

TL;DR
Documenting my grow in detail from a noobs perspective; possibly useful resource, every1 welcome to join and chime in

I just recently joined this community and due to having an issue with my monotub, started reading lots of posts and must say I am in awe of what you guys did here, so I decided to document my efforts in both the hope of receiving lots of input I can use myself, but also for future growers to potentially learn from both the mistakes I will (inevitably) make and from your shared wisdom. I personally enjoyed reading the longer posts the most, where lots of context was being established, and hope this turns out to be helpful for future newbies like myself and not all too boring to the veterans.

The Story

I only first stumbled upon mushrooms in 2020, but instantly had my mind blown and fell in love with the experience. Back then a friend wanted to make her first monotub, but after failing too many times with colonizing grain-bags, she got sick of it and quit. She had bought all of the stuff already and in the end, one bag of grain-spawn made it. She gave it to me and a friend and said we could do whatever we want with it, she was going to toss it anyways, but if we happen to get some harvest, we could share it with her. Ended up with well over 100 dried grams after 3 flushes, which we only had to toss at that point, because my buddy moved out of his flat. After sharing a lot with friends, as well as consuming quite a bit, those are now almost gone, which is why I decided to make some more. Since it had worked out very well the first time, why change anything? So I ordered some grain-bags and spore syringes and went to work.

The Process/what I plan on doing

Basically document almost everything I do. Figured this could turn out to be a very interesting journey from a consciousness perspective, paying close attention, as well as keeping an open mind and learn new things. This was something I planned on doing anyways, but since I‘ve kinda buried myself in the forum the past couple of days, I thought this would be a good thing to share with everyone. Plus, I actually have to the time to do so. And it‘s always a good idea not to be the smartest (/only, in the other case) person in the room.
I‘ll give a detailed account of what I did so far and the reasons for doing so, good or bad; post regular updates in the comments, so the timeline can be preserved and try to compile and apply the information and advice I receive along the way. Once (and if) we get there, I also plan on writing up a summary of everything you guys and the process itself have taught me, so future generations can benefit from it.

All that being said, the first comment will have all the details of the current state and what I did so far. I hope you all have fun participating, sharing knowledge or simply quietly enjoying the ride and if there‘s anything I can do better in regards to making this the best experience possible for everyone, please let me know! I‘m honestly glad to be here and sincerely hope this turns out to be a good mix of learning myself and making your wealth of knowledge accessible for others.

Cheers!

Alright, let‘s get this started!

Equipment
(I‘ll use metric units, where it doesn‘t really make too much of a difference. For example: 1 liter = 1,06 quarts)

- 5x 10ml Cubensis B+ spore syringe (vendor)
- 3x 2,5 liter pre-sterilized grain spawn bags (vendor; special rye grain/vermiculite/nutrient additives)
- 2x ~60 liter monotubs with six 5 cm/2 inch holes
- Coco Coir
- Vermiculite
- Gypsum powder
- 70% Isopropyl alcohol
- 2x Spray bottle
- Polyfill
- Ductape
- Trash bags

I have since been informed that vendor bought spore syringes and pre-sterilized grain bags are not an advisable starting point, but this was what worked the first time around and I simply didn‘t know better. Once again, remember that I‘m very new at this and even though I do a decent amount of research, it can prove quite difficult to translate such a huge amount of information into the right actions without prior experience. =)

Progression

The vendor advised me to inoculate each bag with two spore syringes, close the injection holes with ductape and thoroughly mix to evenly disperse the spores. I tried one bag with only one syringe, just to see if that would suffice and also to see a difference.
Bags 1 & 2 were inoculated on July 14th, with two and one syringe respectively. I cleared my storage room, which sin‘t too full anyways, since I only moved in about 9 months ago (at the time) and pretty much saturated the air with my 70% Iso spray bottle. Put all the tools inside and sprayed them down as well. Then went to take a shower, put on gloves and a mask and walked in there naked. Gave everything a quick spray, prepared stripes of ductape and inoculated the bags (also flame sterilizing the syringe). I‘ll leave Bag 1 aside, because that went into my first tub and I want this to be more of a “from start to finish“ kind of thing. This is my progress log:
- July 20th - Bag 2: first signs of mycelium visible
- July 23rd - inoculated bag 3 with the remaining two spore syringes (followed the same process, but left a time window, because I didn‘t want them to fully colonize at the same time and sit on the shelf until my tub was ready - also never broke up and mixed Bags 2 & 3 for the same reason)
- July 31st - Bag 3: first signs of mycelium visible
- August  7th - Bag 2 ~80% colonized, Bag 3 ~10%
- August 16th - Bag 2 ~95% colonized, Bag 3 ~75%
This is were I went and got another tub, because my first attempt was progressing so slowly and I didn‘t want my grain bags to start rotting or something (no idea about the shelf-life of a colonized grain bag)
- August 30th - transferred Bag 2 into Tub 2 (“Technique“ below)
- September 1st - Tub 2: first mycelium breaking through casing layer
- September 5th - “Current Status“ below

Technique

Prepared the substrate 24 hours in advance. Here‘s what I used:
- Coco Coir: 650 g/1,4 lb block
- Vermiculite: 2 liters
- Gypsum powder: 230 ml/1 cup Gypsum powder
- Water: 4,5 liters
Cleaned my bucket, sprayed it with 70% Iso and wiped it down. Wrapped it in a towel, prepared my ingredients and started boiling the water. Added everything to the bucket, poured the boiling water over it, closed the lid and let that sit for 24 hours (didn‘t shake or mix, because the bucket is too small for that). Also the lid doesn‘t shut, so i weighed it down with pots. I then made a liner from a trash bag and cleaned the tub with water and let it dry overnight.
The next day I got everything prepared, put gloves and mask on and went to work. Sprayed and wiped everything with 70% Iso, put the liner into the tub and sprayed and wiped once more. I used another bowl (about a quarter the volume of my bucket) to mix the substrate a bit and test for field capacity (light squeeze: a few drops of water, heavy squeeze: a nice little stream). Then layered substrate and spawn like a lasagne, with a casing layer on top and lightly patted down, just enough that it‘s nice and even, but can still breathe. Put on the lid, filled the holes with polyfill pretty tightly and put it into my storage room for colonization. (The ratio probably works out to around 1:4)
Up until this point I got nearly all my information from YouTube videos. Did a lot of scouring the forum these past couple of days and definitely plan on continuing to do so.

Current Status

So the tub has been colonizing for close to a week now in the quiet darkness of my storage room and this is what it looks like:

Looks good to me. Plenty of condensation and healthy looking growth. Of course I stand to be corrected at all times. Plan on waiting for it to fully colonize and then move outside for it to get some light and maybe remove a bit of polyfill from the top holes to provide better free air exchange.
As for Bag 3, which is fully colonized by now, I‘ll wait until I transfer that to a tub in order to keep the “live experience“ alive.

Environment

My apartment has only two rooms with windows, one of which is my bedroom, which I keep dark most of the day, the other is both the living room and the kitchen and therefore has some fluctuations in temperature, when I‘m cooking. I also keep the windows cracked pretty much all the time. This is also where I would keep my monotubs for fruiting, because of the light. The inoculated spawn bags and the monotub during colonization were kept in my storage room, which only has ambient lighting, which I kept turned off for now. Temperatures are probably around 20-25°C/68-77°F, which should be decent conditions for the mushrooms from what I gather. Outside climate will likely cool over the next couple of weeks/months, so I expect room temperatures to drop a little, although my apartment is relatively constant, being on the 4th floor of 7.

Questions

- Where should I put my tub for fruiting? Is the living room with cracked or open windows and changing temperatures due to cooking a bad idea? Will leaving the light on in my storage room provide enough lighting for the mushrooms? Should it be on the floor or elevated? What are likely the best options here?
- And of course any suggestions and possible improvements for myself and others who are starting out. Feel free to just chime in, mention whatever you feel is correct or incorrect - I won‘t get offended.

Really looking forward to this ride and grateful for this community. Thank you all!

Welcome to the shroomery!

Don't sweat the long post, I'm bad about doing it from time to time myself, lol.

If you can, try to find a "grow" light/bulb that is around 6000k lumens. They're often called "grow" bulbs or you can get a separate light. Or sunlight through a window works great too.

I work in a walk in closet and I have a "grow" bulb in the ceiling socket. Then I have a small desk lamp with a grow bulb that I can move around as needed. Shrooms love light.

As far as air goes you'll see the phrase: "passive FAE" mentioned a lot. This means no forced air, breezes, etc. Just take the lid of your mono, unsnap it and flip it over so a slight gap forms all around the top of the tub and you're done.

Passive FAE, fresh air exchange, is all that's needed. Many others have had success with different methods but it's not necessary unless you just want to experiment.

So either sunlight or a 6000k light, passive FAE and watch surface conditions. Other than that the less you mess with them the better. Hope this helps and good luck!

Quick Update:

Colonization is coming along nicely! About 8 days in, I'd say it's about 70% there. Moisture looks good and if I shine the flashlight into it, I can see tiny waterdroplets on the mycelium. Also looks real healthy (to me).

Now how would you move forward?

As you can see, I spawned to fruiting conditions, but packed pretty tightly with polyfill. I did this because that's what worked the very first time I tried my hand on growing mushrooms AND more importantly... the first Tub I made in this grow, I deprived of air, by taping over the holes during colonization. That one took almost a month to fully colonize and of course you can see the difference in this second tub, so I believe it was because of FAE.
What I plan on doing is to wait for it to fully colonize and then introduce light by moving it to a room with windows and additional FAE by reducing the amount of polyfill (especially the top holes and maybe cracking the lid, depending on the sitation). I could also just leave it as is, because as you can see from the picture, FAE is happening, but not sure it's enough. What do you think? I've also seen people move to full fruiting quite a bit earlier than 100% colonization.
Of course this is a dynamic process, but I'll still be grateful for any input.

Cheers!

Thank you for the encouragement, much appreciated!

And thanks for participating... especially on the lighting, because I remember reading ambient lighting is enough, but regular lightbulbs don't usually pack that kind of power, no?

So when do you think this is ready? As stated in the original post, it's got a pseudo-casing layer on top. This is about 11 days into colonization and polyfill is packed pretty tightly. Was planning on removing some of the poly to increase FAE and maybe crack the lid, once fully colonized. The question is: What counts as fully colonized with only pseudo-casing on top? This lookin' good to you or give it more time until everything is thick white? Appreciate your input!

what the fuck
injecting spores into grain is bad anyway but 20cc per bag? 0.5cc would be more than enough

Yeah, reasoning provided by the vendor was that they would colonize more quickly and therefore less likely to contam. I did try one bag with only 1 spore syringe, which went into this tub. Did take longer, but not too much. Guess I can save some money if I do go down this road again, which I know isn't advised. =)
Any advice on current conditions?

Thanks man! Yeah got that advice already at one point. It's also what the vendor suggested at first, but this had worked out great the first time I tried and if it keeps working I might get tempted... even with all the advice going against this.

My advise is to learn agar to make sure your cultures are clean.
Spores to agar is safer than ruining your grain and wasting materials.
You got lucky my friend.

Welcome. Seems like you're making an effort and really trying in earnest to enhance your skill and improve your game. Good looks man.

My advice is just listen and make your own efforts as close a facsimile as possible to the teks and advice you are given here. Even if it goes against your own current data set. It is a humbling experience just to use the search tool on this site, ya know?

Welcome again and thanks for your passion and enthusiasm.

Thanks man! Yeah I know... beat the shit out of that search function already, but having all of it come together takes a while. I hope this is useful to some people after it's done tho =)
Looking forward to how this turns out, because I already feel I've got a better idea of what's going on. If it does turn out well, I'll make sure to take some prints and move along as people have suggested, but for now I'll stick with what I have, because that's all I can do.

Update: We've got pins!

I took the tub out of my storage room and put it into the living room, where it'll get some indirect sunlight about 7 hours ago and flipped the lid. Did this after confirming my suspicions here, that the mycelium was reaching for air and needed additional FAE. Don't know if the pins were there before, or showed up in this short amount of time, but hey... they're here!
