PINK and BLUE Oyster Grow- Cracked Corn. 5-22 UPDATE 3
#17880402 - 02/28/13 02:13 PM (10 years, 11 months ago) |
|
|
So this will be a King Oyster and possibly Pink Oyster Grow.
Lets get it! I live in a state where corn is super cheap. This bag cost me about $15.

And straw is cheap as well. This is 10 pounds I got for $5

So I'm gonna treat the Cracked Corn like I would WBS or Rye per RR VIDEOS.

This picture is to figure out how much the corn will expand on a 24 hour soak
Now for the KINGS
I have a Rye jar and 2 agar plates I got in a trade. These are grown from multi-spore, not by me.

Agar #1
So the plan.
I'm gonna cook the first 7 jars (my PC holds 7 at a time).
I'm gonna G2G 5 of the jars. Then take 2 transfers to 2 different master grain jars.
I'm gonna do one straw bag with the 5 jars, fruit for a clone. Then run that clone through the rest of my corn.
The goal of this experiment is to figure out all my numbers for my business plan.
How much will it cost and what I will actually yield from these fixed numbers.
Any advice, questions, comments, and suggestions are VERY welcome.
Welcome to Chicago Mushrooms
_______________ UPDATE 3/1
HOW I PREP CRACKED CORN.
If for no other reason, cracked corn makes your home smell DELICIOUS!
Anyway.
This is a picture of the expansion of the corn. I originally filled the jar to the 2 cups measurement.

This next picture you have to look at like and 80's MOVIE MONTAGE lol.

I drained the corn, and THOROUGHLY rinsed it off.
NO BOIL.
I directly set it on some old shirts (you ex's are the best) to DRY THOROUGHLY.
When your cracked corn is completely DRY, I load it into quarts
When you tilt the jar...
...it should move FREELY. Then

NOW TO PRESSURE COOK. 15psi for 90mins.
See you tomorrow for the transfers!
____________
UPDATE 3/2
So this is how my Cracked Corn jars look after PC. They move and shake just like any other grain.
So you know the drill. G2G'd the King Oyster Rye mother to 5 Cracked Corn jars.

Then DAMNIT
Lol. I need a bigger SAB. On the last jar I hit the top of the SAB and the jar slid out of my hand.
So this is a pic of the transfer
Then I did 2 agar transfers. One from each.
And thats all in a days work.
Any comments and questions are appreciated.
I have NO IDEA HOW TO START A ROTATION. Tips?
UPDATE 3/4
So...
THEY LOVE THE CRACKED CORN!

I'll post more pics tomorrow. This is two days after grain to grain.
UPDATE 3/4
So,
I guess I should just remind you that these were spawned 4 days ago.
FRONT OF THE JARS

BACK OF THE JARS
AGAR TRANSFERS FROM 3/4

Ya...
Questions, comments?
UPDATE 3/7
The jar on the left is almost done colonizing.
The jar on the RIGHT was done and is now broken up for GRAIN 2 GRAIN.

Another pic of the broken up jar
Laid on its side. Sorry, this jar is pretty full, but
YES THE GRAIN MOVES FREELY FOR POURING.

I'm confused, are using the cracked corn to inoculate the straw? Or are you using it as a substrate? Honestly, I don't think cracked corn is any good for either purpose. I like your motivation, but I would suggest using rye or wheat. It is far superior to corn, especially cracked corn, in every way.

Adding something like coarse vermiculite may help if there are troubles with the corn being too sticky. I would think a ratio of around 3:1 (corn:vermiculite). Or you could find a bag of whole corn kernels if that really is cheaper than wheat berries...

Straw should be more like $4-5 a bale. Also I tried a bird seed mix that had cracked corn in it and was a gooey mess. Ended up tossing it all out. I've been getting Barley 40lb for $20 at agway. Cheaper than rye atm. Materiel costs are not that important for hobby grows but getting to know your local supply chain will make things easier. If your in the corn belt try to find chopped corn cobs. Should work for oysters.
Good Luck

cracked corn will be very difficult to shake once it is hydrated properly. do not use if for grain spawn. if it was whole corn would work, but it is pretty large so you dont get many inoculation points. I have used popcorn for grain spawn and it worked fine, but cracked? if corn is cheap where you live, so is wheat or rye most likely. they grow in the same place. The cracked corn will work ok as an enriching agent if you are sterilizing your bulk sub. Do not use pasturized cracked corn and straw mixed together as a bulk sub. it will contaminate lightning fast. must be sterilized.

I bet you could do a pf style tek with the corn. Corn/verm cakes. You would need to sterilize here too.

Yes I will be using the Cracked Corn as spawn. I have used Cracked Corn for Cubensis grows before, no issues.

A cake? Sounds like poor preperation. I don't know why so many people are against the Cracked Corn!
I've been able to use it successfully, as spawn to coir anyway.

Once again, I've done grows of WBS verses Cracked Corn, and WBS that I mixed with Cracked Corn.
Both were successful.

Lol. well, the purpose of this experiment is to see if I can use the Cracked Corn as spawn.
I never had a hard time shaking my colonized jars and have used the Cracked Corn as a g2g before, with cubes.
So, I am definitely committed to this Cracked Corn grow. lol.
If it doesn't work then I only waste 2 or 3 weeks, about $20...
But, I will gain some very VALUABLE experience and knowledge...
and so will you guys!

OK YOU CONVINCED US!! Go for it! sorry we were all being negative nancys...and yes i will accept the fact that although it is a bit unorthodox, as long as you get the hydration just right, it will work fine. and it is pretty damn cheap. although i think you got ripped off on the straw. you should be able to get bales for 3.50 to 4 dollars and bales should weigh 20 pounds more or less.

interesting! will be watching this thread, looking to get into gourmet/edibles myself. also, great job on using a mason jar for agar, didn't even cross my mind! that way, you can actually PC your equipment and have a more sterile environment.

Hell yeah ^ I do all my agar in babyfood jars (they're cheap!). I make em with filter disk breather ports and injection ports too. That way, they double as my "anything" jars. Also, if you have a clean agar colony and you don't have a certain mycelial look in mind, you can inject nutrient liquid into the agar jar and make a very clean LC that way. I'm actually surprised more people don't do this. It's the preview option for culturing. You can see it (as agar)before you commit to working with it.

Oh ya! thats the only way to do agar, IMO. The only times I've gotten some contams it was from cloning and wild prints.
I use 1/4 pt masons actually. these i got from a trade,

I love the idea of baby food jars. And I love using a no pour agar method.
I don't use any air ports or injection ports tho. I had thought about it, but I dont really use syringes.
