Its an Agaricus, and not one of the most common species. What habitat did you find it in?
Interestingly, the way to tell if these are toxic is to smell them. If they smell like ink then they are toxic and if they smell like anise or like store mushrooms then they are edible. I know its weird to base the decision on whether to eat them or not on the smell, but thats how it works.
If you get it wrong you puke for a few hours but there is no need medical attention. The ink smelling ones make you wish you were dead but won't actually kill you.
The color that it stains when its damaged is also significant. Bruise the flesh and check for a color change; also check again in the same place after 30 minutes to see if that color has faded or changed at all.
A good way to ID Agaricus in California is to go to the mykoweb species page and keep clicking on Agaricus species until you find one that fits.
mushroomhobby.com also has some good Agaricus info for CA.
Your mushroom reminds me a little of Agaricus bitorquis, if that is the mushroom you have then you are pretty lucky. Based on the way it looks there is a good chance that this is one of the edible ones.

also see how they smell when you cook them, bad agaricus smell like shit when cooking in a pan with butter.
a good method to check for staining is to cut the stem in half and bruise the flesh on the inside of the stem near the base, from there do as alan said and check back on them later.

Thats a good sign. Make sure it doesn't start smelling like ink when you cook them. If it still smells like store mushrooms as they cook, eat a small amount to try them the first time.
What kind of trees were they under?
Does the bitorquis description match? Is the flesh pretty hard compared to store mushrooms?

yeah i looked at the link and it matched !
(thanks for that link it is really helpful!)
but to be honest i don't know what type of trees sorry
the mushrooms themselves weren't in a bunch they were scattered about ,
in an area of about 30 ft .
last night i took a pinch of one and kept it under my tongue for like 10 min.
and i was fine (i know its not the most safe way but i was pretty sure it was bitorquis.)
the only thing i questioned is looking it up on mykoweb.com the pic matched and the description but on mushroom hobby they looked different.
but i took a little bite and i was fine so.....

There are often differences in the way mushrooms look due to environmental conditions such as humidity.
Sounds like you are ready to cook it up.
