24hr light incubation
    #9989234 - 03/17/09 05:07 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I searched it out. Found that light during jar incubation is neither helpful or hurtful. But I couldn't find if specifically 24hours is a problem. It's been almost 5 days since I inoculated my first 5 wbs pint jars. and about an hour ago checked the jars and seen the first signs of mycelium in 1 of the jars. I would hate to inhibit the progress over something simple.

It just takes time assuming that the conditions are right. If you used spores then from what I understand it can take longer. If you use mycelium or a LC then it is typically quicker to colonize the jars. I keep all of my jars inside of a refrigerator that was converted into an incubator so the only time my jars see the light of day is when I check em out.

I inoculated several jars of WBS 11 days ago and still no noticeable signs of growth. I only used 1cc each from a B+ spore syringe though. I’ve heard of instances where it takes months to colonize a jar sometimes. That’s why I ordered 2 more syringes and will make of ton of LC.

Patience and don’t give up.

well, theyre on scheduel. I'm not really worried about that. I just wanted to see if 24hour light specifically, could inhibit growth. I wouldn't want to unnecessarily handicap myself over that.

You don't want 24 hour light.  Move them somewhere else.  Mycelium needs to develop a circadian rhythm to perform at optimum.  Put them in a room that is exposed to normal day/night ambient light.  Darkness won't hurt, but 24 hour light will impede pinning later.

I keep all my jars in my garage which during the winter is heated to only 55 degrees F. I picked up a free refrigerator, rigged up a heater, a thermostat, and made an incubator shown on this page

It keeps a perfectly stable temp, it just happens to be dark, keeps the clutter out of my house, and seems to work like a charm. The refrigerator was free too so all I had to invest in is some dirt cheap FlexWatt and a thermostat.

While keeping the jars inside of a fridge is cool, if you're able to just keep them at normal room temperature that would be better.  I noticed on one of the pictures in your thread that the temp was showing 82F, drop that down.  If you're basing your incubation temps on The Mushroom Cultivator which says 86F... thats old, outdated, and false

See, plenty of jars cultivating on open shelves @ normal room temperature.  Because those jars are being sealed within that fridge, the air is stagnant, likely slightly humid, and warm.  When keeping your jars at that temp, the core temperature of the jars will likely reach in excess of 86F and then be more prone to bacterial contamination.  It'll also slow down your colonization.

Now, if you can't heat the ambient air to normal room temperature.. and that is your own bet because you live near the north pole or something... then that will work.  But if you have a fruiting chamber that needs to be at normal room temp anyways, so keep them in the same room.

Good info ... thanks!

I'll have to lower the temp to what ... around 70 degrees F?

I just always heard that fruiting temps should be approx 10 degrees lower than the incubation temp. Fruiting temp being room temp. That's why I brought the temp to 82 F.

I have a good size grow room in progress so I'll keep the jars in there once it's completed.

I do appreciate your input and it's valued greatly. This may explain why I have 10 quart jars 12 days old of WBS (noced with spore syringe 1cc per) and NONE show any signs of life yet.

Yeah just keep your jars anywhere between 69-76F.

Not only is there a large amount of mis-information on the internet and various forums, there is still a lot of mis-information on here.

The best learning resource that I would suggest you use is the search function.  Go to advanced search, click the trusted cultivator box, keep the search within a couple years, and then put it ANY subject you're curious about.

Just go through everything from beginning to end, spore printing, syringe making, sterile technique, grains, fruiting conditions, etc.  Even things you think you already know, learn again.

Half the battle is wading through misinformation.
