Holy fuckin SHIT i checked up on one of my terrariums this morning and the fucker was INFESTED with molds!!!!! PINK AND GREEN!!! AIEEEEE!!!! good thing is, none of the cakes/caseings were effected! just the PERLITE i rescued the cakes/caseings and tossed them in my other non-infected terrarium.
then i chucked the perlite, and bleached teh fuck out of the rubbermaid....
has anyone else had this happen before? i had plenty of h202 in my perlite water... why the fuck was this terrarium infested yet the other one was fine.... strange thing is, this perlite is newer than the non infested perlite.... i just dont understand wtf happened.. perhaps its cuz it had alot of water in it? man im pissed..... ive never had to deal with a big time contamination before.... i figured it would strike my old terrarium, not the new one!!! i thought there was not enuff nutrients on perlite for mold to grow... but boy was i wrong, that shit was covered in pink and green fuzzies.... should i toss the cakes that were in there? they seem to be doing just fine.... not a hint of mold on em... (they were all 1st flush cakes)

Shit dude... You're in for some nasties if you save those casings. Once you can see colour (pink n green) it means that the mold has sporulated and everything that was inside the terrarium is most definitely contaminated. In your case it's even more imperative that you exterminate all traces of the contams since the pink contam could possibly be "fusarium" which is highly toxic! (If I remember DM correctly)
The H2O2 is primarily effective against cobweb and won't do much against contams such as trichoderma (greenmold) or fusarium. Odds are that since you moved the casings to your other terrarium it too has been contaminated by the spores from your old terrarium. You will probably have to clean it thorougly as well pretty soon... As the motto usually goes on the contam forum: "Don't mess with nasty contams, just chuck it"
You could try a controlled experiment with the new perlite to check if it's contaminated or just chuck it and stick to your old supplier which is probably wiser. This is the first time I've heard of perlite carrying contams though.
Let us know how it works out, ok?
Peace & Love, Laguendo
BTW. This post should probably have been made in the contamination forum.

You're not fucked.
I have seen and heard of other casings getting trich w/o the others getting them. You'll be fine. As long as you dont see contamination on your casings, your OK.
There is mold spores everywhere in the air, they may be concentrated in your area right now, but, really, thats what the casing is for. Its to block any contams from festering in your casing.
Dont throw it out just yet. Wait to see what happends. You can then decide.

i never use h202 in the perlite water. i grow shrooms in pop bottles, 1 cake in each botttle with perlite in the bottom, and a piece of tinfoil in between. ive never had a problem with contams...why exactly??? its simple. IT DOSENT REALLY MADDER (literally)...(he's out of it so pay no attention to his rants...although what he said is true)

You'll defineatly want to use at least some H2O2 when fruiting. The reason is, that the wet perlite provides the perfect habitat for any kind of bacteria or other fungi... the H2O2 won't affect your cakes in anyway... I'd suggest that you use it.

>>>I have seen and heard of other casings getting trich w/o the others getting them. You'll be fine. As long as you dont see contamination on your casings, your OK.<<<
I had trich on a case B4 w/ another case sitting right next to it. I cut the trich part out (about 3-4mm's of it) bleeched the hole, patched it, and both still fruited w/o green.
But I would NEVER fuck w/ the pink. NEVER.

Well, its been a few days now, and so far so good... i think.. heres the lowdown..
my contaminated terrarium STILL isint up and running cuz my partner in crime is a fuckin stoner (if u ever grow with someone, make sure they ARENT potheads) and he didnt pickup the perlite yet....
so all my cakes/caseings are sitting in one terrarium, its getting section 8 up in dis mo'fo... my shrooms are gettin all thugged out and shit.... i think i seen one pull a gat on me the other day....
anyways, one of my OLD cakes 3rd flush had a spot of green on it.. so i chucked it... i dont think it was related... it was really old... the rest are fruiting nicely.....
as for the caseing.... its ready to fruit..... i can see the little pins forming... BUT i also notice a faint fuzzy growth..... its not cobweb... probably just mycellum.... BUT theres a chance that its green that hasnt sporulated yet..... only reason i think this is becuse its not as strong or white as the myc thats showing right now.... only time will tell... i figure by tommrow or the next day i will see if its green or not... i sure hope not.. cuz the caseing is picture perfect.... and the pins are forming.... wish me luck!

In my experience, the mean green starts as small, WHITE circles, then as it grows turns green. So I'd agree with you and say you don't have the green

I had an issue with perlite a few months ago. I still have mixed emotions about it, though I am using some now with a few edible casings. I have a terraium set up using hydrokorrels and a couple air wands, and it seems to be working rather well with the casing. Hopefully this will be a suitable replacement for me. When I had the terraiums setup to do cakes, I used the hydrokorrels exclusively and birthed the cakes right on it. I would use the same terraium for months and with many cakes without ever changing the water or cleaning it out and never had a single issue, hell the hydrokorrels used to fruit. The time I switched to casings and perlite I had major issues. I even put off growing for a month because I was afraid of losing yet another specimen.
Now that you have me paranoid with losing the casings I have going, I think a trip to the hydroponic store is in my immediate future.
