what kind of music do you listen to, regardless of the singer's gender?  name a couple of your favorite bands or something.

tool, hendrix, incubus, sublime, stone temple pilots, audioslave, metalica, NIN

i'd like some female singers with very strong voices. preferably some kind of guitar group, not pop like britney spears, ya know?

ah..  i see.

well, one of the heavier female fronted bands i'm a fan of is Love of Diagrams.  that's the album Mosaic.  Love of Diagrams is punk inspired, hard fast guitars, fair use of distortion and fuzz.

you might also like The Pack A.D., which is a bit of a garage blues rock outfit.

you could also give The Vivian Girls a listen.  a lot of stink about them in the indie scene.  it's in the genre of lo-fi twee pop, highly reminiscent of Talulah Gosh.  i'm a fan of this sound, though i'm not sure it'll be straight-forward rock enough for your tastes.

other notable artists i'm a fan of, yeah yeah yeahs, be your own pet (pretty rockish, punk inspired), the do, the blow, santogold (particularly her remixes on Diplo's Top Ranking: part 1 part 2), dengue fever, blonde redhead, joanna newsom (there was a thread about her like yesterday i think)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Black Mountain (mixed in/traded off with male vocals, the female ones are not to be missed if you like Grace Slick)
Sleater-Kinney
PJ Harvey
Neko Case
Bjork
Blonde Redhead
Mazzy Star

For a few.

Metric, The Bird and the Bee, Emily Haynes (she is the lead singer for Metric, but she does a lot of solo stuff), Tilly and the Wall, Teagan and Sara.

Teagan and Sara are the most guitar heavy of the groups, they also have very commanding voices.  Metric just put out a new album that I have been listening too constantly for about a week. Tilly and the Wall uses a tap dancer instead of a drummer, I think it works really well.  The Bird and the Bee is more electro/indie/pop, so you might not care for that as much.

Oh, I almost forgot Rilo Kiley/Jenny Lewis.

i don't know if i'd exactly call Tegan and Sara guitar heavy...  don't get me wrong, i'm a fan.  but they're definitely pop.  not like shitty britney pop, but real pop.  pure pop.

and the bird and the bee have a really fun song called "polite dance song" that Eric Wareheim made a video for.  it humors me greatly

Lacuna Coil: Listen to their album Comalies.  It's cool.  Not the greatest musicians but she is hot as FUCK (the female singer and they're from Italy) and she has an awesome voice.  (Very tool like of me to listen to bands only because they have a hot singer, but fuck it I might as well be a tool in a good way).  Their latest album Karmacode sucked balls.  Oh yeah and they are I guess a "metal" band.  Heavily distorted and de-tuned guitars, all that standard shit.

The Distillers:  A now broken up "punk" band.  The singer Brody Dalle, has mad tattoos and shit and if you like chicks that look like they love it fucking ROUGH, then she is a hottie.  As with most bands, their earlier albums are the better ones.  Hope this helps.

This, definitely seconded. A raw, fun, memorable female singer not to far of from Janis Joplin. And the "garage blues" album itself is one of the most soulful pieces of music in the indie thread compared to overly-cheesy, over-synthesized, over-produced electronic indie band sound that is more than half the new music in there. Excuse the irrelevant point.

I tend to really love female singers.  I don't get into that poppy shit either.

Beach House: Released an incredible album last year "devotion" Lazy psychedelic sweetness with re verb.

Cat Power: Anything before she got sober.

El Perro del Mar: (woops, poppy) But so beautiful "from the valley to the stars" Latest album and the sweetest most sincere guide to ego/physical death IMO.

Jana Hunter: Dark texas psychedelic folk.

Kimya Dawson/Moldy Peaches: Cute folk punk about having babys and poop.

Julia Holter: Faaaaar OUT! casio psychedelia(myspace)

Nite Jewel: Funky as hell and lovin pillz.(myspace)

Just myspace that shit and fallow friends around, you might find something you LOVE.

dude, don't get me wrong, i love lo-fi.  like seriously.  i have a major hard-on for that fucking irreplaceable fuzz that fills the void like no other.  BUT.  you can't always knock in-studio production.  obviously you're not a fan of the electro-indie genre, but you really ought to give some of that stuff a serious, unbiased listen.  like the fucking Diplo remix alum i upped (Top Ranking).  that stuff is very produced.... but so. fucking. awesome.  i LOVE that album.  there are so many fucking gems.

Wow, I haven't heard that name in years.  I remember back in the mid '90's when Mandylion came out listening to it a lot.  The only song I really remember though is Strange Machines, where she was singing about time machines or something, lol.  Man, I'm going to have to find a copy of that album and pick it up again, I haven't heard it in probably over a decade.

Hopefully you have itunes. Jessicka, from Scarling and Jack Off Jill.

She has been nominated by a TON of local festivals and whatnot for best/most important vocalist.

Their song City Noise is a favourite of mine. Give it at least 15 seconds before you fall in love ^_^ Its incredibly amazing

I always thought Sinead O'Connor had a pretty powerful voice.  This song gets pretty intense toward the end.

OH god, I can't get enough of this female vocalist. Julie Christmas, so passionate, so emotional, so frightening! Amazing and different. Everyone should listen to this band for a new perspective on vocalists.

The chick from Andain (Mavie Marcos) has an incredible voice.

And call me what you will, but Avril, Ms. Spears, Dido, and Enya are all top-shelf in my books. Beyonce too  :headbanger:

For sure!

She is incredible. Scarling and Jack oFf Jill have the same singer. So you should check out JOJ too.  It's a little more on the metal/rock/gothic side, somewhat akin to Marilyn Manson.
