Trout's notes are good.

trout.yage.net

but camario is right. 20 years to get something big and active.

You could always graft, that'll produce a large peyote, like 5 years of growth in 1 year or so. The question of activity is still up in the air around here with that method.

But eitherway, if you're looking to grow just to grow then graft, or let seedlings develop or both... Enjoy.

Hmm, I could be wrong here, but... isn't it like it takes 20 years in the wild to get a harvestable button, while indoor grown specimens, ferts applied, mature a lot faster? Thats what I tought, dont know where I picked that up though...

I think he meant he wouldn't be able to destroy something that you took 20 years to help create. I know if I had a button for that long it would have to be the most perfect day in my life for me to decide to chop it up and eat it.

He never said anything about eating.
Owning such a rare and revered plant can be enough in itself.
Anyway, grafting to a faster growing rootstock is a very viable option if you are after MUCH quicker growth. As for the activity of grafted plants, I would guess they would be very low in potency due to lack of stress. I would suggest removing the button from the rootstock and planting it directly in the ground and then waiting the better part of a year before attempting to harvest. This actually works well because the remaining part of the cactus on the grafting stock will grow again (possibly with multiple buttons) so you are doubling the number of cacti you get!

You don't eat the whole plant just the button at the top. If you cut it off correctly then the base will produce more buttons. The plant can live for a very long time being harvested like this.

The buttons you cut off can be rooted and will become peyote plants themselves, if you don't eat them that is.

I've just planted twenty seeds, half of which have germinated already.

As far as i'm aware they will take about five years growing in optimum conditions to mature to an eatable size.

My plan is to get these growing up to a state where i can take some cuttings and clone them so that i have about fifty by the end of 6 or 7 years.

I'm starting a part time degree course in February which will take 6 years to do, and my plan is to have some peyote to celebrate my success at the end of that time.

I will not be grafting them whatever happens. I find that to be offensive to the spirit of the thing. I have to trip on this stuff and raping them with another cactus in order to make it grow beyond its natural parameters is not something i would want to do.
