Gypsum: Is 1% magnesium content acceptable?
    #9989620 - 03/17/09 03:59 PM (15 years, 5 days ago)

Just bought some Green Earth brand Granular Gypsum.  I've been growing for months and haven't been able to find gypsum ANYWHERE until now (I live in Southern Ontario, I dont think its used very much here).

According to the guaranteed analysis, the content of this gypsum is:

Calcium Sulfate (CaSO4*2H2O): 67%
Calcium (Ca): 18%
Sulfur (S): 13%
Magnesium (Mg): 1%

Any idea whether or not this stuff is safe to use?  I'm of course aware that magnesium is detrimental to mushroom growth, but will such a small amount make any noticeable difference?

I really hope this stuff is usable... I've spent craploads of time busting up drywall into tiny chunks that will fit in my coffee grinder, then grinding the drywall chunks into powder and using that in place of proper gypsum.  This method takes 2-3mins per grinder-full, and yields probably 50mL of gypsum per load (after sifting out the cardboard) - thats about 1/20th of a quart of gypsum for every 2-3mins I spend grinding the drywall.  I always end up using less than half the recommended amount of gypsum in all my substrates because this method is so time consuming and low-yielding... not to mention I've ruined 2 coffee grinders already.  I really hope this gypsum I bought is appropriate!

Thanks

It's fine.  Anything less than 2% Mg is OK.
